As an Illinois student, Michael S. Hopkins, ’92 ENG, went from a walk-on with the Fighting Illini Football team to a starter and, eventually, team captain. That same tenacity and determination would help carry him far beyond Memorial Stadium. 🚀

Hopkins went on to become a NASA astronaut and U.S. Space Force officer, completing two spaceflights, logging more than 330 days in space and conducting five spacewalks.

Total enrollment in the three-campus U of I system this fall grew 1.2% to a new record of 102,267 students. A year earlier, enrollment grew 3.4% to 101,081.

But across the three campuses, undergraduate international enrollment declined 5.9% from a year ago, and the number of graduate and professional students dropped 15.4%. Last year, undergraduate international enrollment rose 5.9% but graduate students declined 8.8%.

Altogether, the three U of I campuses have 15,747 international students, or about 15% of the student body. The drop in international students comes as universities face a demographic cliff that will bring double-digit declines in the number of college-age students over the next decade.

Among the challenges for international students are more strict visa requirements. Students in India, a key source of international students for Illinois and other universities, are having difficulty scheduling visa interviews, says U of I President Tim Killeen.
