Diligent Fitness is a membership community in Detroit, MI (Corktown) dedicated to helping women 30+ build strong, resilient bodies through strength training and simple, effective nutrition.
Fearmongering around cortisol is everywhere, and it’s actively hurting women’s health.
Cortisol isn’t a villain…it’s a vital stress hormone. Your body releases it in response to any stress, whether that’s “bad” stress (tight deadlines, arguments) or “good” stress (a tough workout). It is SUPPOSED to go up. The system is designed for it to spike and then come back down.
The issue isn’t the spike; it’s when it STAYS high.
If you are chronically under-eating, skipping rest days, and ignoring life stress, your body never gets the signal to recover.
Truthfully, a toxic relationship or constant burnout is doing far more damage to your baseline cortisol than running a few times a week ever could.
We cannot afford to skip cardio out of fear of a temporary cortisol response, especially as we age.
Cardiovascular disease prevalence jumps notably for women starting around ages 35–44 and climbs steadily through midlife.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women, yet midlife women are constantly told to tone down their effort to “protect” their hormones.
Seeing a fit, sculpted influencer brag that she never does cardio isn’t the flex people think it is. Low body fat and muscle tone don’t automatically equal a healthy heart.
And no, leisurely walking, while fantastic for general daily movement, is not a replacement for true cardiovascular training once you reach a certain level of fitness. Walking is a daily baseline activity everyone should do. Cardio requires pushing your heart rate up and keeping it there for a sustained period.
Cardio doesn’t have to mean running. Rowing, cycling, swimming, intense incline walks, or circuit training all count.
You’re not THAT fragile. Cardio is part of a well rounded fitness routine. Cortisol will act right if you take care of yourself outside of your workouts.
Stewardship.
We were gifted this body and to think we have no duty to take care of it, intentionally, is crazy.
One reason I don’t post client weight loss stories very much at all is because my goal to get women in my gym is MUCH bigger than changing what size clothes they wear. Women in our space report much bigger success stories…getting off their medications, improving health markers, feeling relief in back, hip, and knee pain, and building up their fitness to do the things they want to do in life.
You CAN build a body you love and admire BUT don’t let that be the driving force for exercise because it’s not a strong enough catalyst for LASTING change. Your WHY has to be much bigger than your clothing size.
The only 8-year old boy whose training partners are women 65+ 😅
Sometimes I catch them making bets with him 🤣
I love these ladies and so does my boy ❤️
If you’re 65+, and need a fun place to work out with a hilarious group of women and their mascot, we’ve got a senior membership with your name on it!
