Who knew a gym could be so chic? (We did.)
08/19/2026
Yesterday marked one year since I lost my stepdad. I shared a little at that time about how he owned a successful business himself and how having him only an hour and a half away helped me feel confident in my business. He was my sounding board, my security blanket, and personal handyman. I knew if anything ever went sideways he could probably fix it.
At the end of his life he shared that he didn’t really care about his own business anymore, at least not in the same way he once did. He only cared about his faith and spending time with family and friends. I’ve really been absorbing that message over the past year.
Losing Bill has radically changed the way I view the world and the way I operate in my life, and yes, in my business. Ultimately, it is *the* reason I got rid of yoga classes, or at least it was the final nail in the coffin. It wasn’t actually a hard decision at all, it was an inherent knowing. Life suddenly became too precious to be doing something that was draining me. (I don’t know why so many people glossed over all the personal reasons I gave for getting rid of yoga classes…)
It’s been bittersweet evolving my business over the last year without him. I still talk to him a lot, especially when business stuff feels overwhelming. I imagine his response to some of the thoughtless comments I’ve received probably would have been “who cares what they think/say/feel, this is your business. Do what is right for you.” In a different mood, I imagine he maybe would have just shrugged his shoulders, scoffed, and said “f**k ‘em.” His voice inside my head has made me a little bit ruthless as a business owner, but it’s honestly what has gotten me through this. I no longer have to give my energy to everyone, especially those who don’t even see me as a human.
Anyway. For the first time ever, my business feels 100% right. It feels like me. It feels like everything I’ve ever wanted and envisioned. I’m fu***ng proud of it. More proud than any other thing I’ve ever done so far. I’m thrilled for the next chapter. I really wish Bill was here, but I know he’s proud of me too. The way I run my business now is because of him, and it feels really good.
(Thank you, Bill)

This is the first time ever that I have felt like my business looks and feels exactly like I want it to, and I want to share it with all of you! Come to our open house Friday between 4-6pm. See the space, meet me, buy some merch, get a sparkling water. AND if you want, you can get a little 10-min tutorial on how to deadlift, bench press, or squat.
I’m really excited about this and I hope you are too! See you there 🤩

We’re back and better than ever! I can’t wait for you all to see what we’ve done ✨ we’re celebrating all week long with a merch sale, open house where you can come learn how to bench press, back squat, or deadlift, and a Rooted get-together. See you there ♥️

I believe everyone deserves a safe + supportive place to workout, which is why we’ve offered sliding scale memberships since day 1.
For the most part, it has worked really well and I’ve been very proud of this community for showing up for each other. Lately it’s been clear that something is off and the memberships are not being used the way they were intended.
So, if you find that you misunderstood how the memberships are intended to work, or if your financial circumstances have changed since you first registered, please reach out and we can fix it, no questions asked. I appreciate it.

We’re so back 😎
This schedule starts next week (8/9) but there are a few classes that will not be starting until mid-August. They’re coming though, I promise.
Questions? Our website probably has the answers: RootedFitnessDSM.com
See ya in class ✨

August is here, where are you?

Sharing for transparency because I think it’s important and also it’s maybe interesting for like 10 of you??? Idk?
I think most people have no idea what numbers for a small business look like, and for that reason I think it’s important to talk about! Small businesses make the world go round. Thanks for being part of mine 🤟
A couple other maybe interesting things:
Summer is our slow time + we’re making less money than normal. After 5 years I’ve finally learned to not panic about it.
Because of our sliding scale options, the total amount of memberships we have is actually not at all correlated to how much money we’re actually making. We hit the most memberships we’ve ever had last month and are actively making about 3k less than we did over the winter.
The number of memberships we have also weirdly does not correlate to how full our classes are! I’ve considered capping total memberships before (and maybe still will someday) but again, it doesn’t appear to make a difference on overall class sizes or waitlists.
I’m proud of how many donations we’ve made, but I’m more proud of the tangible support our community has given, like clean-up days for the Beaverdale big event and food donations for community fridges.
Okay, done boring you now!
