We've got new faces stepping on the mats, bringing fresh energy and a hunger to learn. It's always exciting to see the gym grow and evolve with people who are ready to put in the work.

And speaking of familiar faces... Sensei Chocolatte is BACK in the house! 👊 She's been missed and we are beyond happy to have her leadership, presence, and expertise back where it belongs. The mats just feel right again.

Also, Steve Downer has been sharpening his Jiu Jitsu skills like a blade, putting in the work and preparing for his upcoming MMA fight. Iron sharpens iron, and Steve is forging himself into something dangerous. Keep your eyes on this one.

The energy is high. The work is real. And Westside is only getting stronger.

🥊 UNANIMOUS DECISION VICTORY! 🥊

Congratulations to West Side Martial Arts & Boxing Academy's own Steve Downer on an outstanding performance tonight, earning a unanimous decision victory.

Steve's original opponent was unable to compete, but another competitor stepped up on short notice and showed a lot of heart. We appreciate him accepting the challenge and helping make this charity event possible.

Steve stayed composed from the opening bell, controlled the pace, and put together a disciplined performance, smoothly commanding each round on his way to the win.

We're proud of the work Steve has put in inside the gym and the professionalism he displayed in the ring.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support Steve, and thank you to the promoters, officials, volunteers, and fighters who made this charity event a success.

Just won his THIRD Golden Gloves championship. Already qualified for nationals AGAIN this May in Tulsa. And his last fight? Got the dub. 💪

Now the goal is simple: bring a national title back to Des Moines.

Coach BJ () is in his corner. West Side Martial Arts & Boxing is his home. But getting to nationals, and winning, takes more than skill. It takes travel. Expenses. A full team behind him.

I need to give a shoutout to the two warriors who showed up when most people were still asleep.

Henry and Seth.

These two locked in for the 6 AM and 7 AM classes this morning and put in the work before the rest of the world even started moving. Shadow boxing, drills, conditioning, they came ready. No complaining. No hitting snooze. Just work.

Early bird catches the worm. And these two were hungry.

Respect to both of you for showing up when it counts. That discipline is what separates the casual from the committed.

I need to take a moment to give Daby his flowers.

I didn’t speak much about him in the earlier post, and I owe him an apology for that. So this one is for you, brother.

Daby stepped into the Golden Gloves ring this past weekend and fought his heart out. He didn’t get the decision from the judges, but let me tell you something, he walked out that ring a winner.

Not every victory shows up on a scorecard. Some are won in the guts, the grit, and the grace you carry when things don’t go your way. Daby showed up, fought hard, and represented West Side with class and heart.

Much respect and love to this fighter. You’re still a champion in our eyes and in our gym.

We see you. We appreciate you. And we’re just getting started.

GOLDEN GLOVES WEEKEND RECAP 🥊💥

This past weekend, our team stepped into the ring at the Iowa Golden Gloves and left it all out there.

We had three fighters compete. Two came away with wins. One fought a tough battle and lost a close decision, but walked off that floor with his head high and his heart intact. That’s what being a fighter is about, not just winning, but showing up when it’s hard.

Shoutout to Abdullah as well. Stepped in, competed, and represented West Side the right way.

And then there’s Bryton.

First fight with us. First Golden Gloves championship. Took the win. Secured the dub. Headed back to NATIONALS. 🏆

Look at that hardware he’s holding, that’s a championship belt earned through blood, sweat, and months of preparation. He made a statement in his debut with our team, and he’s just getting started.

From day one, we’ve been preparing him for moments like this. Watching him grow, sharpen his tools, and step into that ring with confidence, that’s what coaching is all about.
