COMMUNITY LISTENING PROJECT

A different kind of gathering.
Presence over performance.
Conversation over consumption.

On September 25th from 7–9 PM, we’re gathering at Urban Sanctuary in historic Five Points on Welton Street—a place once known as the Harlem of the West—for an evening rooted in music, art, listening, and community.

Urban Sanctuary is a Black-owned, women-led space built around care, movement, wellness, and the belief that community itself can be a form of healing.

And sometimes care looks like this:

Sitting together.
Listening closely.
Making room for artists to speak about what they see, what they create, and how they are interpreting the world around us.

Hosted by DJ Abi C, this Community Listening Project features conversations with Machete Mouth and Jag Soul about the brilliance of their work, their creative perspectives, and what it means to make art within the political climate of this moment.

We’ll share thoughtfully crafted, non-alcoholic elixirs throughout the evening—made not to cloud the mind, but to enhance the senses and give us something beautiful to gather around.

We’ll also be joined by a local civic leader, to be announced, creating space for community members to ask questions, engage in conversation, and connect around the issues shaping our neighborhoods as voting season approaches.

Because listening is a form of participation.

And gathering can be a form of care.

What if sanctuary isn’t somewhere we go,
but somewhere we remember?

A breath.
A movement.
A moment of coming home to yourself.

Honoring the beautiful ways our teachers create space for that remembering — and how, together, we make room for one another to do the same.

Your sanctuary lives within you.
And sometimes, community helps you find it.

Thank you Mo Jones for this beautiful reminder that is US🖤

Representation matters.

Especially in the spaces where we come to heal.

For a long time, it hasn’t always been typical to see Black and Brown bodies, q***r bodies, and so many of the people who make up our communities reflected in wellness and movement spaces.

But representation isn’t an extra.
It is essential.

There is power in seeing yourself reflected in the room. In the practice. In the people guiding you through it.

In this moment from Sanctuary Stories, Ali speaks to what it means to see ourselves represented.

Maybe you’ll see a little of yourself here, too.

Come sit with the full conversation on YouTube. 🤎

At Urban, we’re not going to pretend otherwise. We’re a Black-owned studio rooted in Five Points — a neighborhood that has always known something about resilience, about culture, about holding community when the world outside gets loud.

Maybe a Sanctuary is a place
that reminds you of yourself.

A place to slow down.
To listen a little closer.
To move through what you’re carrying
and make more room inside.

Across both spaces,
there are different rhythms—
but the same invitation:

to arrive as you are,
to find your way back to yourself,
and to find connection in the space between us.

We’re grateful for every person
who has found their way through these doors.

There’s always room for you here. 🖤

Thank You Greentea Peng for the wisdom in your Work- this Stays Satiating the Spirit!

There’s something beautiful about being rooted in a place.

In Five Points, we’re surrounded by history, movement, culture, and the people who continue to breathe life into this neighborhood.

We’re grateful for these spaces.
For the folks who walk through the doors.
For the ones who share their practice, their energy, their stories.
For every little moment that reminds us that space becomes something more when we share it.

A quiet moment of gratitude for Urban Sanctuary—and for everyone who helps make it feel like home. 🤎

Thank you The Reminders for your incredible art and brilliant lyrics in this Soul Satiating Song🖤

teacher spotlight ✨

meet katie — yoga teacher, aerialist, pole dancer, and devoted student of movement in all its forms.

her path to the mat began during a season of health challenges, and what started as healing slowly became a decade-long love affair with practice. katie completed her 200hr training here at urban sanctuary, where she also discovered the aerial arts — and never looked back.

these days her practice runs deeper than asana. she’s been sitting with the eight limbs of yoga, honoring where this lineage comes from, and letting that study reshape how she moves and teaches. movement is medicine for katie — it’s confidence rebuilt, health restored, and self-expression finally given room to breathe.

off her mat, she’s playing instruments, dancing, dreaming up new flows — always chasing spaces that feel inclusive, liberating, transformative. because for katie, movement was never just physical. it’s a portal — to consciousness, to community, to each other.

come flow with katie 🤍

Thank you Swamp Princess for your beautiful voice and ear snacks
