Niwot resident Ashlee Wood competed at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in singles and doubles and came home with the gold in singles and a silver medal in doubles with doubles with partner Andres Rodriquez.
To prepare for the Special Olympics, Ashlee trained with the Longmont Racqueteers, Gonzo Tennis Academy, and Special Olympics Team Colorado at Randy Ross Tennis Center under coach Sharif Abdelhamid.
"Winning the gold medal represents far more than athletic success," said Ashlee’s dad. "It is a testament to courage, resilience and the belief that, with hard work and confidence, anything is possible."
Ashlee is now preparing for the regional and state tournaments at the Denver Tennis Park and U.S. Air Force Academy on July 26 and August 22.
Support Ashlee and the athletes at the Special Olympics competitions this summer as a volunteer!

with Lou Iantorno!
Lou says “As a USTA league team captain for many years, my focus has always been on the players, many of whom became friends through our time together on the court. I was not trying to build a dream team for nationals; I was building a team centered on relationships and camaraderie.”
Lou’s mindset of tennis being about community and his active involvement as a Player Representative with the Thornton Tennis Association (TTA) are some of the reasons why he was selected to be the Intermountain Tennis Association’s Colorado representative for the 2026 USTA L.E.A.D. Initiative, which represents Leadership, Empowerment and Development.

As a long-time supporter of Special Olympics Colorado, USTA Colorado is proud to help create meaningful tennis opportunities for athletes through grant funding and competition support.
We’d love for you to join us as a volunteer at either the Front Range Regional Tennis Tournament on July 26 at Denver Tennis Park or the State Summer Classic Tennis Tournament on August 22 at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
It’s a joy-filled day of great competition, sportsmanship, and community. Volunteers help make it all possible by setting up courts, supporting athletes, keeping score, and collecting balls throughout the day.
Come be part of an unforgettable experience on and off the court. 🎾

Earlier this month, 12 participants came together at Denver Tennis Park for a free Colorado Wheelchair Tennis Foundation (CWTF) wheelchair tennis clinic! 🎾♿
Whether they were rallying with experienced wheelchair players or trying tennis in a chair for the very first time, participants gained hands-on experience while learning fundamental skills and instructional techniques that help create a more inclusive and integrated tennis environment for players of all abilities.
A huge thank you to Denver Tennis Park for providing the courts and to our incredible local wheelchair tennis coaches—Frank Adams, Kendall Chitambar, Colby Kortum, and Jane Shafroth—for sharing their expertise and making this clinic a success!
