🥋 Jiu Jitsu Philosophy: Developing Your Strategy

Over the years, one of the biggest things I’ve learned about Jiu Jitsu is that knowing techniques and knowing how to use Jiu Jitsu strategically are two very different things.

As I’ve evolved as a practitioner and instructor, I’ve developed my own philosophy around three areas:

Position Before Submission:
Control the position first. Understand where you are, where your opponent wants to go, and stay a step ahead. The submission is often the result of doing everything before it correctly.

Adapt Under Pressure:
Jiu Jitsu rarely goes exactly according to plan. Your opponent gets a vote too. The ability to stay composed, recognize what they’re giving you, and change direction in real time is what separates experienced grapplers from people who simply know techniques.

Efficiency Over Effort:
As I’ve gotten older, this has become even more important to me. Good Jiu Jitsu shouldn’t require you to win every exchange with strength, speed, or athleticism. Position, leverage, timing, pressure, and precision allow you to accomplish more while doing less.

That’s really what I want my students to understand.

Don’t just collect techniques.

Learn how positions connect. Learn how to recognize reactions. Learn when to attack, when to control, when to transition, and when to simply let your opponent make the mistake for you.

The longer I train, the more I believe that high-level Jiu Jitsu isn’t about knowing more moves.

It’s about making better decisions. 🥋

This one brought back some memories. 👊

I was going through some old stuff and found my original Bas Rutten Big Books of Combat — Volumes 1 & 2.

I’ve had these things for around 25 years.

For the younger generation of Jiu-Jitsu and MMA guys, these probably just look like a couple of old martial arts books.

But if you were actually training during that era… you know.

I was there.

I was training when MMA was still evolving right in front of us. There wasn’t a blueprint yet for what a complete mixed martial artist was supposed to look like. You had wrestlers learning submissions, Jiu-Jitsu guys learning to strike, kickboxers learning takedown defense, and all of us trying to connect the pieces.

And information wasn’t sitting in your pocket.

There was no YouTube.

No Instagram technique clips.

No endless library of online instructionals.

You learned from your coaches, your training partners, VHS tapes, seminars…and books like these.

And these weren’t little technique manuals.

Bas put together over 1,000 pages and thousands of step-by-step photos covering striking, takedowns, submissions, ground fighting, conditioning and the mentality of actually fighting.

I remember studying this kind of material and then going into the gym and trying it.

That’s how we learned.

Looking through these again today, what’s really cool isn’t just seeing how much MMA has changed.

It’s seeing how much of it is still there.

Techniques have been refined. Training has become more sophisticated. Athletes are better. The sport has evolved beyond anything we could have imagined back then.

But the foundation is recognizable.

These books are pretty rare now, but honestly, the value to me isn’t what somebody might pay for them.

It’s opening them and remembering where I was in my own martial arts journey when I bought them.

Twenty-five years later I’m a Jiu-Jitsu black belt, I’ve spent most of my life on the mats, and now I’m teaching another generation.

Yet I can open these books and immediately remember being the guy who was still trying to figure all of this stuff out.

That’s pretty damn cool.

Old-school Jiu-Jitsu and MMA guys — who else had these? 🥋👊
