BEARS REMEMBER (PART 3): just got these awesome photos featuring COAST GUARD ACADEMY MEN’S LACROSSE players knocking out the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb - climbing the stairs of Dimick Hall for 1 hour and 42 minutes^^^ at 0500 on Friday morning in remembrance of the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is an annual event where participants climb 110 flights of stairs—matching the height of the World Trade Center towers—to honor the 343 firefighters and other first responders who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

I'm sure I am going to miss some guys - but here is who I see in the sea of cadets:

WELCOME HOME 'OLD BEARS' (PORTSMOUTH): just got this great photo featuring COAST GUARD ACADEMY MEN'S LACROSSE program 'Old Bears' (L-to-R): ENS Nick Butler, CGA '24 (Defense/Northport, NY/Northport); ENS Evan Granahan, CGA '26 (Defense/Aldie, VA/ John Champe High School) and ENS Luke Nemsick, CGA '25 (Defense/Shrewsbury, MA/ Salisbury School) on the pier in Portsmouth, VA - with USCGC FORWARD in the background (I think?).

Evan & Luke returned from a deployment aboard USCGC FORWARD - a 270-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth, VA…and Nick was there to welcome them home. Nick is assigned to USCGC NORTHLAND - another 270-foot cutter in Portsmouth.

Here is what I know:

USCGC FORWARD successfully concluded a 75-day deployment, returning to Virginia following the ex*****on of operations READY EAGLE and VIGILANT SENTRY.

Operating across multiple areas of responsibility, the cutter provided critical maritime security during the historic International Naval Review in NYC, enforcing the Captain of the Port security zone on the Hudson River. Following operations in the Northeast, FORWARD deployed to the Caribbean Sea to project a counter-maritime migration presence and safeguard the region.

The deployment featured significant operational milestones, including the first underway replenishment between a 270-foot medium endurance cutter and Homeland Security Cutter OCEAN^^^.

“It was a privilege to support New York, which was a once-in-a-generation operation for the crew,” said CDR Vic Galgano, CO of Forward. "Following that up with international engagements in support of American interests throughout the Caribbean was incredibly rewarding. I’m proud of the outstanding work of our crew to keep Forward at peak readiness so we are able to safeguard the maritime domain at home and abroad."

^^^ = The HSC-Ocean initiative rapidly deploys leased commercial support vessel capabilities to deliver supplies, equipment, and personnel directly to our cutters underway.

BEARS GIVE BACK: just saw these great photos featuring COAST GUARD ACADEMY MEN’S LACROSSE player Cadet 1/c Harrison Holland (Midfield-FOGO/Ocala, FL/Trinity Catholic) dropping some LEADERSHIP knowledge on the Windham High School Eagles football team via Zoom from New London, CT.

It turns out, Cadet 2/c Tobias Perkins' (Attack/Windham, ME/Windham) dad, Coach Matt Perkins, is the head football coach at Windham High School, ME. He does a leadership series every year with his student athletes where he has a handful of people come in as guest speakers throughout the season. Today's speaker (via zoom) was Harrison. The Perkins Family hosts numerous cadet-athletes throughout the year and Harrison’s name kept coming up as a motivating figure.

Harrison talked to the team about character, resilience, accountability, humility, and the like - how choices in life, in school, and on a team shape success.

The word from Windham was that Harrison was OUTSTANDING. Pretty cool (but not surprising) that he took the time to talk to the team.

We always say it - some truly remarkable men make up the BEARS LACROSSE family and have for a long time...some truly remarkable families - that built these men - as well.

BEARS STICK TOGETHER (ANNAPOLIS): just got my first photo featuring COAST GUARD ACADEMY MEN’S LACROSSE program ‘Old Bear’ celebrating Riley and Ashleigh at the McNULTY Wedding in Annapolis, MD. ‘Old Bears’ pictured include:

— LT Charlie McAllister, CGA '20 (Goalie/Pleasantville, NY/Iona Prep) - works in Facilities Engineering at Base Charleston, SC.

— Mr. Anthony Wyler, CGA ‘19 (Midfield/Fulton, Md/Boy’s Latin) - got out after five years and works for his family business, Alho Masonry Inc., in the Baltimore area.

— Mr. Matt Huemme, CGA ‘18 (Midfield/Sherborn, MA/Dover-Sherborn) - got out after five years and works as a senior implementation engineer for AI for Readiness.

— LT Michael McCaslin, CGA ‘19 (Defense/Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) - is an MH-60T helicopter pilot and Aeronautical Engineer - he just arrived at Air Station Sitka, AK.

— LT Nick Wittrock, CGA '19 (Midfield/Dillon, CO/Summit) - is an HC-144B aircraft pilot at Air Station Miami, FL.

Again, love stuff like this - 'the brotherhood' showing up for special events for the guys they played with. Would love more photos from both the McNulty and Hudson weddings last weekend - whose got 'em - please SEND 'EM.

TODAY IN COAST GUARD ACADEMY MEN'S LACROSSE HISTORY - 14 SEPTEMBER 1961: birth date of LT John M. Senyard, CGA '83 (Midfield/Ellicott City, MD/Howard) - the "founder of the Coast Guard Academy Men's Lacrosse program" - who was killed in an aircraft accident in Ilhithi, Kenya on 16 June 1989 with fellow '83 classmate LT Anthony Czapowskyj.

A member of the Coast Guard Academy Class of 1983, John was a Baltimore kid that grew up with an intense love for the game of lacrosse. As a cadet, John was often seen roaming the decks of Bravo Company in Chase Hall (the cadet barracks) with a stick in hand.

He attempted on several occasions to start a men's lacrosse team without success. However, his persistence and example to junior cadets sparked the launch of the men's lacrosse team during the spring following his graduation.

The first photo is John Senyard's Cadet 1/c portrait, the second image is the LT John M. Senyard Tribute Graphic depicting his initials and the Class of '83 seal. This graphic adorned the right sleeve of our game jerseys from 2007-2014 - "OLD BEAR" Alumni are hopeful that this graphic can be re-incorporated in future uniforms or as a helmet sticker. We are very pleased that LT John M. Senyard, CAPT Tom Nelson and the COAST GUARD ACADEMY MEN'S LACROSSE program Goal Flag ceremony were all incorporated into the Cadet Athlete Memorial Panel as part of the new Otto Graham Hall of Athletic Excellence in Billard Hall.

John served aboard USCGC Alert (WMEC-630) homeported in Cape May, New Jersey from 1983-84 and the Electronics Engineering Center (EECEN), Wildwood, New Jersey, from 1984-85. He attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif., from 1985-87 where he earned a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. He reported to Maintenance and Logistics Command – Pacific (MCLPAC) in 1987 where he met California Lacrosse Hall of Fame Coach Stockton Buck and started as a volunteer Assistant Coach for the St. Ignatius College Preparatory program in nearby San Francisco.

We are also very proud of the relationship we have developed with St. Ignatius College Prep of San Francisco, CA to present their annual LT John M. Senyard Award to continue to celebrate his legacy - most of the groundwork for this was done by 'Old Bear' Gregory Bernstein, CGA '11 (Defense/Baltimore, MD/McDonogh). Various players, officers and 'Old Bears' have represented the COAST GUARD ACADEMY MEN'S LACROSSE program in recent years including LT Connor Ellis, CGA '19 (Defense/Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) with Douglas Piper in May 2016, Doug and Roger Nayden II , CGA '10 (Attack/Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) in May 2017; Roger attended solo in 2018 and in 2019, LT Stuart Carley, CGA '14 (Attack/Houston, TX/James E. Taylor) attended solo...no dinners in 2020 or 2021. In 2022, LT Jack Pope, CGA ‘19 (Midfield/San Diego, CA/Westview) attended the banquet and presented the award. In 2023, we got another "two-fer" as LT Matt Nagle, CGA '19 (Midfield/Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) and current player Cadet 3/c Evan Granahan (Defense/Aldie, VA/John Champe) attended the banquet. Matt was assigned as the Commanding Officer of USCGC TERN - an 87-foot coastal patrol boat homeported in San Francisco, CA. Evan was assigned to USCGC TERN for Phase 1 of his Cadet Summer Training Program. In 2024, LT Matt Nagle represented our Program again - presenting the award just prior to departing for NYU for his Coast Guard-sponsored Law School program.

The last two years 2025 and 2026, LTJG Jack Bragaw, CGA ‘24 (Defense/Arnold, MD/Broadneck) attended and last year's photo is included below. Seriously, thank you Jack - great stuff. Jack was assigned to USCGC BERTHOLF a 419-foot National Security Cutter homeported in Alameda, CA but just departed to take over from LT Greg Hill, CGA '22 (Defense/Southlake, TX/Carroll) as XO of USCGC WILLIAM CHADWICK - a 154-foot Fast Response Cutter homeported in Boston, MA. Hence, we will need a new BEARS LACROSSE representative for 2027? Anyone?

BEARS FALL BALL BEGINS: And "it's on", the foundation for the 2026-2027 edition of the COAST GUARD ACADEMY MEN'S LACROSSE Program begins this week!

As previously stated...by NCAA rules, the Bears are allowed 16 fall dates to practice (24 dates of official team functions - I believe), including one of them designated for competitive scrimmages - what we refer to as our annual Fall Festival event. The Bears typically practice three days per week for five weeks for the other 15 practices.

Fall Ball will culminate again this year with the the multi-team Fall Festival event at Springfield College on Sunday, 18 October 2026. No times or opponents have been published yet - so stay tuned!

BEARS AIM HIGH: just pulled these from the Summer 2026 archives - awesome photos featuring COAST GUARD ACADEMY MEN’S LACROSSE players Cadet 2/c Nolan Grizzle (Midfield/Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and Cadet 2/c Tobias Perkins (Attack/Windham, ME/Windham) during their cadre phase overseeing the Academy Introduction Mission or AIM program.

AIM is an intensive, one-week summer immersion for rising high school seniors. AIM lets students experience a realistic slice of cadet life through military drills, physical fitness, and academic workshops. It serves as a premier trial run to help students determine if a Coast Guard career matches their future goals.

Guess who attended AIM? Tobias’ younger brother Tegan! What’s up Tegan? Ya in? Ya out?
