BACKBENDS

Backbends are not about being bendy. They're about learning extension without losing your mind.

In Iyengar Yoga we prepare for backbends the way you'd prepare for anything meaningful: step by step. We learn to stabilize the legs and pelvis so the spine can extend with clarity. We learn to broaden the chest without jamming the lower back. We learn to keep the breath steady while the work gets intense.

A good backbend feels spacious, not squeezed.
That's why we use intelligent preparation and, when needed, props. A wall, a chair, a bolster, a belt. Not to make it easier, but to make it more truthful.

If backbends have ever felt intimidating, you're not alone. The Iyengar method makes them approachable by teaching the actions first, then building the pose.

Come explore backbends with us this week. You might be surprised how strong and open you can feel.

Some adjustments aren’t about pushing you further into a pose. They’re about showing you something you can’t feel on your own.

Here, Randy is using an adjustment for Sirsasana with the legs in lotus that he learned from senior Iyengar teacher Patricia Walden. Holding the crossed legs this way isn’t for balance — it’s to give the student a reference point for lift, so the pelvis and spine can organize around something more precise than “hold still and don’t fall.”

This is a lot of what an Iyengar class actually is: adjustments passed teacher to teacher, tested and refined over decades, applied hands-on so a student can feel — not just hear — what correct action means in a pose most people would otherwise just muscle through.

If you’ve only ever attempted headstand alone, it’s worth noticing how different the pose feels with real, informed hands on it.

Forward extensions week is here.

In Iyengar Yoga, forward bends are not about yanking your hamstrings. They are about learning how to lengthen with intelligence, support, and breath.

Try this in your next Parivrtta Paschimottanasana (or any seated forward extension):
• Sit on height (blanket) so the pelvis can tip forward
• Lengthen the sides of the waist first
• Use a strap so the arms can help the spine get long

Slow down. Get curious. Let the pose teach you.

Every one of these looks like a different pose. In today’s two-hour class, they were all the same pose.

Randy built the whole sequence around one action: the inner groins, the crease where the inner thigh meets the pelvis. It started on the floor and a bolster, in Supta Padangusthasana and its variations — legs going straight up, out to the side, bent and drawn in, the strap doing the holding so the mind could stay on the groin rather than the grip. From there the same instruction followed the class off the mat entirely: into Adho Mukha Vrksasana at the wall, into Urdhva Padmasana in Sirsasana, into a weighted Ardha Chandrasana with a sandbag hanging from the back foot to feel the inner grouns. It showed up again in Trikonasana with the front foot toes lifted, in Upavista Konasana and its twist, in Bhujapidasana, in Ardha Padma Paschimottanasana and Ardha Matsyendrasana II, and finally in Pindasana in Sarvangasana to close — and that’s still only part of what the full two hours covered.

That’s the part that’s easy to miss watching from the outside. It isn’t twelve unrelated shapes strung together. It’s one understanding, asked for again and again in positions that have almost nothing else in common — lying down, standing, twisting, upside down, balanced on the hands. The shape keeps changing so the action can be found more precisely each time.

This was advanced work, built session by session over years, not a sequence to lift and attempt on your own. But the principle underneath it applies at any level: notice what your inner groins are doing even in the simplest pose you practice, because that’s the same seed everything else here grew from.

By the time the hands actually find each other, most of the real work in this pose is already finished.

Randy Just walks Rohit through Marichyasana II here almost like a checklist, not a shape to drop into. First, the foot: lifted with both hands, one at the ankle and one under the foot, the knee doesn’t need to touch the floor. The correction that matters comes next — turning the shin down toward the ground and reaching out through the inner heel, so the ankle undistorts before the heel is drawn deep into the abdomen. Only then does the other leg bend. The first arm reaches forward, internally rotates, and swings around the shin toward the low back. The second arm comes around from behind. The hands catch.

And even then, it isn’t over — Randy has both arms roll back, the spine move in, and a clear lift from the sternum and chest before any forward motion happens over the front knee.

That order matters. Catch the bind and immediately fold forward, and the spine is usually the thing that gives. Lift first, and the fold has somewhere honest to go.

Next time you’re working toward a bind like this one, notice whether you’re lifting your chest before you move forward, or just folding to reach your hands.
