PART ONE
Dallas, Texas.
Rachel stopped inside the doorway.
“Who is she?”
Mark rose slowly, calm enough to be cruel.
“This is Brittany.”
Rachel had heard that name for two years. Brittany was the employee who texted after midnight, joined Mark on “emergency” business trips, and laughed too loudly whenever Rachel visited the office. Each time Rachel questioned him, Mark called her jealous, insecure, and desperate because fertility treatments had failed.
Now Brittany was carrying the child he had blamed Rachel for not giving him.
“How far along are you?” Rachel asked.
Brittany looked at Mark before answering. “Seven months.”
Nine years of marriage seemed to collapse inside Rachel’s chest.
For three of those years, she had endured injections, surgeries, and miscarriages while Mark complained about medical bills and accused her body of ruining his chance to become a father.
Mark folded his arms.
“Brittany will stay here until the baby is born.”
Rachel stared at him. “You brought your pregnant mistress into our home?”
“Our home?” He laughed. “I pay the bills.”
Rachel’s hand tightened around her purse.
“What exactly do you expect to happen?”
“Brittany needs rest. After the delivery, she’ll return to the office. You’ll help with the baby during the day.”
The cruelty took a moment to register.
“You want me to raise the child you conceived while cheating on me?”
“Do not make it sound ugly.”
“It is ugly.”
Brittany shifted against the cushions. “Mark said you loved children.”
Rachel looked at her. “I wanted a child with my husband. I did not volunteer to become an unpaid nanny for his mistress.”
Mark stepped closer.
“You do not work.”
“I left architecture because you asked me to build your company.”
“And now I am asking you to support this family.”
“This is not my family.”
His face hardened. “You should be grateful I am not divorcing you.”
Rachel almost laughed.
“Grateful?”
“You have a mansion, credit cards, and everything you need. All I want is obedience.”
Rachel reached inside her purse.
“I’m calling my attorney.”
Mark grabbed her wrist.
“You are not calling anyone.”
“Let go.”
“Say you will help with the baby.”
“No.”
His fingers tightened until pain shot up her arm.
“Rachel, do not embarrass me in front of Brittany.”
“You embarrassed yourself.”
She tore free.
“I will not raise the baby you made with your mistress.”
Mark slapped her.
The blow snapped her head sideways and sent her stumbling into the entryway table. A framed wedding photograph crashed to the floor.
Brittany gasped but remained seated.
Mark seized Rachel’s arm and dragged her upright.
“You live under my roof,” he snarled. “You eat food I pay for, and you enjoy the life I built.”
Rachel pressed one hand to her burning cheek.
“You hit me in front of her.”
“I am making you understand.”
“Understand what?”
Mark pointed toward Brittany’s stomach.
“Taking care of my children is your duty as a wife.”
The room went silent.
Then Rachel’s phone, lying open inside her purse, suddenly spoke.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
“Rachel, the police are on their way.”
