I thought I was having a heart attack at the airport.

2025. I decided to take a trip, go to Hawaii. And I'm in the Chicago airport and I feel like I'm having a heart attack. So I'm mentally working on myself, breathing, talking to myself, everything will be okay. I get on the plane, arrive at my destination, and go, "What was that?"

I work with thousands of people with panic attacks, and that's exactly what they say. "I feel like I'm having a heart attack." They go to the hospital, there's nothing wrong with their heart.

Consciously, did I know what it was? Had no idea. So I asked myself, did anything bad happen at the airport? Nothing. Then I remembered, two different times, running through the airport, luggage in tow, thinking, "I feel like I'm gonna die." I didn't remember that, but my brain did. It happened twice.

So I changed those memories, just how they were internalized. Now I'm consciously aware of what's going on inside my body when I fly, noticing any triggers. Nothing. 100% calm. My body was speaking based on a memory recorded that I had no conscious understanding that I even had.

This is how your body works. This is how your brain works.

Does the body keep the score?

I always say that the brain is like a stereo. The volume is how loud the speaker speaks. The body is the speaker. You can't blame the speaker for the sound and the noise or the song playing because you're wasting your time.

Now, can you calm the body? Yes, you can. But it doesn't change the record that plays to make your body sing or scream from what's happening. So does the body keep the score? No, it shares a score.

People who say it's the body are missing the most important part about our whole operating system. It's the amazing brain of ours. I call the brain the intelligent idiot and the faithful servant, because it's very smart, but what it takes in, it doesn't judge as bad or good. So the body speaks the truth the brain holds.

Your brain is a survival system.

👉 Free Course: https://skillstochange.com/pages/get-started

We call the brain the intelligent idiot because all it does is takes in and gives out. It doesn't say it's bad or good. If you had a traumatic childhood and you survived, this part of your brain is gonna give it back to you today. Boom. It's a survival system. Your world is built from your basic understanding, your survival of your home world, from what you experience. But today, here you are, you have a zap in your body, you feel bad.

We look at some of John Sarno's work. He X-rayed knees. One knee has no cartilage, no pain. One knee has cartilage, and they have pain. The one that has cartilage shouldn't have pain, and the one that doesn't have cartilage should have pain. What's the difference?

It's hard to concentrate when you're busy worrying about something.

Now here it is, the psychiatric nurse. She came to see me, and she's been diagnosed ADD or ADHD. And of course she said, "Robert, there's no way I could learn at school. It's impossible. 'Cause while I'm at school, I'm worrying about what's gonna happen when I get home."

Now, you're sitting here with me, and you're worrying about what's gonna happen at work or when you go back home, and your husband or wife are gonna be upset with you. It's hard to concentrate when you're busy worrying about something. And that's how she created ADD, ADHD.

100 things he hated about school.

👉 Free Course: https://skillstochange.com/pages/get-started

It's hard to concentrate when you're busy worrying about something. And that's how she created ADD, ADHD. Now, by the way, this is not a disorder. Nothing wrong with your children. The problem is that they don't have coping skills, and so they're worrying about things. They had trauma. School is a major emotional trauma for him.

I wanted him to write down 100 things he hates about school. His parents said, "There's no way he could do that." But they went ahead, and 20 minutes later, he had a list of 100 things he hated about school.

On that phone session, all I did is tap on and address the 100 things he hated about school, changing the emotional dynamics. At one point, he was crying, and the parent says, "What do we do? He's crying." I said, "Keep tapping, keep tapping." The next morning, they were completely shocked. He was dressed, standing at the door, ready to go to school.

She tapped away a pain that she's had for 40 years.

She had 19 orthopedic surgeries. She walked with a walker.

She came to one of my seminars. She had pain in her shoulder, bursitis. She'd had it for 40 years. And by merely addressing it, using the tapping, even though she didn't know what she was doing, she was just mimicking and mirroring what I said and did, she tapped away a pain that she's had for 40 years. Now it's been over ten years. Over ten years, the bursitis pain is not there.

She goes to the doctor. He's looking at the ultrasound. She's in her seventies. He asks how much medication she's taking for the pain. She says, "I don't have any pain in my shoulder." He says, "I can't see how you cannot have pain in your shoulder. There's nothing but bone to bone." But there's no pain.

I asked my kids, "When you were growing up, how was life with me as a dad?"

👉 Free Course: https://skillstochange.com/pages/get-started

Because I don't know how I was as a dad. I was just being normal.

And I asked my kids, they go, "Well, Dad, you were the no man. You were the angry man."

It opened a world to me that I didn't know existed, and that is emotional craziness. I mean, I'm being honest.

Pain. When you have a pain, the problem is not the pain itself.

👉 Free Course: https://skillstochange.com/pages/get-started

The problem is a metaphoric expression of your unconsciousness.

Here's the weird thing. You don't know how to go inside the nut. You don't know how to crack your nut. You don't know how to figure out what's in there.

So what we do is we have several processes. One, we have what you call the art of change.

The art of change is a listening strategy that goes in and pulls out how your brain, unconscious mind, will generate and create pain. It's just a bunch of questions.

Consciously, the answers don't make sense to you. Because we're actually dealing with something that you're not familiar with, and that is your brain.

You had to be tough.

👉 Free Course: https://skillstochange.com/pages/get-started

This is how the brain works. This is how the body works. This is how pain works.

I can't heal you. I really can't. I can't even heal the simple cold.

But I know there's a part of your unconsciousness that knows how to heal you.

Have you ever noticed when you get a cut, somehow the body has this great ability to heal the cut? It's really strange. It just does it all by itself.

Or you bite your cheek, you know, and next thing you know, it's gone.

It's Not My Story That Made You Sad

👉 Free Course: https://skillstochange.com/pages/get-started

You need to be emotionally more intelligent, and how you become more emotionally intelligent is you go inside your head and change the things that you're using on other people's words. If I tell you a story and you're feeling sad, it's not my story that made you sad. It's how you internalize it and represent it.
