One of the marks of a true martial artist is that his discipline does not depend on a place. When life moves him, the practice moves with him.

John recently relocated to Austin for work, but his rhythm remains the same—showing up for the morning classes, staying consistent in his training, learning, helping his teammates and making himself useful wherever he is planted. That says far more than any rank ever could.

The dojo should eventually become something you carry within you. New city, new academy, new training partners—but the same discipline, humility and willingness to serve.

A great first Association Collaboration today with Gracie Allegiance Victoria, Portland, Telos Martial Arts and Corpus Christi teams. This gathering has been a long time in the making, and I am grateful for every Professor, leader and teammate who continues to show up and put in the work. Anything worth building takes time, labor and faithful people, and today was a good expression of the inward work already taking place throughout our teams.
There is something rewarding about watching God's timing bring together what many hands have been quietly building.

Our mission is very clear: world-class Jiu Jitsu, world-class technique, and world-class citizens. We want all three. Skill on the mat should eventually produce something useful beyond it—discipline, character, responsibility, leadership and service.

Today's Kogi teaching was Do — The Way. Dojo means “Place of the Way,” and Kodokan, “Hall for the Study of the Way.” That old educational model reminds us why we gather - Kata teaches it. Randori tests it. Kogi explains it. Mondo examines it. Life reveals whether we actually learned it. For us, the Way ultimately finds its foundation in Christ: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” — John 14:6.

Our next Association Collaboration will be hosted at Telos Martial Arts in Aransas Pass, date and time TBA. Until then, we continue the work as a team — line upon line, brick upon brick.

REPAIRING THE ALTAR ☦️⛩️

Last night at our Lord x Lions Leadership Gathering we spent time in 1 Kings 18 studying Elijah and the altar that had been broken down. What stood out is that before the rain came, before the blessing, and before anything changed outwardly, something first had to be put back in order. Elijah “repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down,” and prayed that the hearts of the people would be turned back to God again.

There is a lot of wisdom in this for all of us, and especially within the dojo. We can spend years developing technique, earning rank, building businesses, gaining knowledge and becoming more capable outwardly, while overlooking what may be falling out of order within us. A belt can show progress in skill, but it cannot govern the heart. The old disciplines of the Way understood that before a man could properly lead others, he first had to learn to govern himself. Scripture takes us even deeper and asks the greater question: What has first place in the heart?

Maybe we don't always need something new. Sometimes we simply need to return to what we already know is right, to prayer that has been neglected, keeping our word, restoring discipline, strengthening our homes and relationships, serving others faithfully, and above all, putting our relationship with God back in its proper place. In the dojo we understand this principle well. When the fundamentals are neglected, adding more technique does not fix the foundation. You return, correct what has been lost, and rebuild from what is true.

That was really the heart of our gathering. Not simply learning about an ancient altar, but allowing the Scripture to make us examine our own. Whether white belt or black belt, student or teacher, there comes a time when each of us has to look within and ask: What has been broken down? What has taken first place? What needs to be repaired?

Labor Day weekend will have a modified schedule with an emphasis on team training, association unity, leadership, and NoGi open mat sessions.

This is a great opportunity for our academies and members to train together, build relationships, exchange knowledge, and strengthen the culture we are developing throughout the Gracie Allegiance association.

Gis and Frankeez! The kids got in the the gi today and took down a 28” Pizza from Frankeez Pizzeria, our new neighbors in the country village shopping center! Good times and good pizza! Going to be a great September!

Training starts at 12PM this Saturday, and we’re excited to host our first Team Association Leadership & Advancement Open Mat. This is an opportunity to train, learn, connect, and grow together while strengthening the principles and traditions that unite our academies. Purple belts and above, please bring your belts so everyone can recognize experience and rolling skill level across the mat. We gather not to prove ourselves, but to improve one another. Come humble enough to learn, disciplined enough to train, and generous enough to leave your teammates stronger than you found them. 🤙🏽

HARD TRUTH. ⛩️

You can fool people with a belt, medals, titles and technique, but you cannot fool the martial Way. Eventually Jiu Jitsu exposes who you really are. A black belt without continuous character development is simply a skilled practitioner wearing a rank he does not truly represent.

Our responsibility is to preserve the standard to produce not only better fighters, but men and women worthy of the art, the lineage, and the Way they represent. Osss!! 🥋

THE FOUR OATHS OF THE DOJO ⛩️

The Four Oaths come to us from the warrior tradition of Japan, preserved in Hagakure, teachings associated with the samurai Yamamoto Tsunetomo. They were not simply words of motivation, but principles of disposition—forming the warrior in loyalty, duty, courage, compassion and service before he was ever entrusted to lead others.
There is something here the modern world would do well to remember. Before a man can lead, he must first know what he serves. The warrior was expected to pursue the Way without falling behind, make himself useful to his lord, honor those from whom he came, and cultivate compassion for the benefit of others (Jita Kyoei). Even loyalty carried responsibility, the old teaching allowed for correcting or take issue with one’s lord when the welfare of the clan required it. True service was never merely agreement; it demanded courage, wisdom and concern for the whole.

For us @ GATX & Lord x Lions, this ancient principle finds its proper order in something higher. Our Lord is Christ—the Head, the Master and Teacher. He did not merely point toward a way; He said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” — John 14:6.

So the dojo is a place of practice, learning to govern ourselves before attempting to govern others, bringing pride and appetite under discipline, becoming useful to our neighbor, speaking truth when necessary, and carrying faithfully what has been entrusted to us.
This also gives us a measure for leadership, words can be borrowed, methods can be copied, motivation can be performed, even the appearance of tradition can be reproduced. But the Way must be lived. Time reveals the difference between someone who speaks of discipline and someone who has become disciplined; between someone seeking authority and someone who has first learned obedience; between appearing to serve and actually becoming a servant. 🙇‍♂️

That wisdom reaches far beyond Japan or the martial arts. It belongs in the home, the dojo, business, leadership and community—anywhere one human being has been entrusted with another.
