The best training partners don’t just make you tougher—they make you better everywhere.
Find training partners who push you to become better on and off the mats.
The right people will challenge your pace, expose the holes in your game, make you uncomfortable, and still help you learn from every round. They will hold you accountable when your effort is low, celebrate your progress when you earn it, and remind you why you started when training gets hard.
Jiu-jitsu is more than submissions and medals. It builds discipline, humility, resilience, and confidence—but who you train with matters.
Surround yourself with people who want to grow. Be the kind of teammate who helps others grow, too.
Iron sharpens iron.
Better partners. Better people. Better jiu-jitsu.

In the chaos of the fight we find peace, strength, and resilience. It is only through exposing our weaknesses that we overcome. Whether they be mental or physical deficiencies, the mats always find a way to assist with building a stringer mind and body to overcome whatever situation life throws your way!
Training Jiu Jitsu isn’t simply a workout, it’s a vessel in which we use to relentlessly pursue our potential and become better people on and off the mats.

NO GI TONIGHT — 6:30 PM.
No collars, no sleeves, no grips to hide behind. Just movement, pressure, and problem solving.
LADIES — this is your invitation.
Jiu jitsu is the one skill set that doesn’t care how big you are.
It teaches you to stay calm when someone is on top of you, how to create space, how to get back to your feet, and how to end a bad situation before it becomes worse.
That’s real self defense, not a keychain.
What else you get on the mat:
— Strength and conditioning that actually carries over to life
— Confidence you earn, not the kind you fake
— A brain break from work, kids, and the phone
— A room full of training partners who become family
You don’t need to be in shape.
You don’t need experience.
You don’t need to be brave.
You just need to show up in something you can sweat in.
6:30 PM. Tonight. Doors are open.

Does it matter if your coach has ever competed???
Yes…it does.
Not everyone is John Danaher. He is an anomaly. He studied the craft under some of the best minds in the sport and dedicated his life to studying, dissecting, and understanding multiple grappling disciplines at an incredibly high level.
That is very different from watching YouTube, attending a few seminars, or taking private lessons and then presenting yourself as an expert.
Competition matters.
Competition puts your knowledge under pressure. There’s another trained person across from you who knows exactly what you’re trying to do and is actively trying to stop it. There are no cooperative partners. No controlled demonstrations. No editing. No explanations.
It’s application.
You can learn techniques from the internet. You can memorize sequences. You can even become good at explaining them. And if the people listening don’t know any better, you can sound extremely knowledgeable.
But being able to explain something and being able to consistently apply it against trained resistance are two different things.
Competition gives credibility because you’ve tested what you teach firsthand.
Does that mean every great coach has to be a world champion? Absolutely not. Some incredible coaches were never elite competitors. AND BEING A GREAT COMPETITOR DOESN’T AUTOMATICALLY MAKE SOMEONE A GREAT TEACHER!
But experience matters. Lineage matters. Training partners matter. Coaching matters. Time on the mats matters. And yes—testing yourself in competition matters.
Jiu Jitsu is growing, and that’s great. More academies, more athletes, more opportunities, and more people discovering something that has positively impacted so many of our lives.
But growth also creates opportunities for people to claim expertise they haven’t earned.
So ask questions.
Who did you train under?
How long have you trained?
Who promoted you?
Have you competed?
Have your techniques been tested against legitimate resistance?
Have you developed students who can successfully apply what you’re teaching?
Credentials shouldn’t be the only thing that determines whether someone can teach.
But they shouldn’t suddenly mean nothing either.
The mats have always had a way of separating what sounds good from what actually works.
Respect the craft. Earn your knowledge. Test it. Then pass it on.
At Narvaez Jiu Jitsu every single coach has competed at one point or another…from kids coaches to adults…we take pride in the fact that we know what it takes to battle!
