STOP COMPARING YOUR JIU-JITSU JOURNEY

“I’ve been training for 5 years. Why is this guy who started 2 years ago already so good?”

Because years don’t tell the whole story. Mat hours do.

Someone training 2x per week and someone training 6x per week are living completely different Jiu-Jitsu journeys.

One student may have a full-time job, kids, responsibilities, or injuries.

Another may be young, competing every month, and training twice a day.

Don’t compare timelines. Compare consistency.

Instead, ask yourself:

Are you better than you were 6 months ago?

Is your defense improving?

Are you understanding positions better?

Are you becoming harder to control and submit?

Are you showing up consistently for the life you have?

If the answer is yes, you’re progressing, AND THAT'S AWESOME!

Your Jiu-Jitsu journey belongs to you.

Train consistently. Have a purpose. Stay patient. Keep showing up.

Don’t count the years. Make the mat hours count.

Want to get better at Jiu-Jitsu faster?

Stop trying to win every roll. Start trying to develop a skill.

If you always roll to win, you'll naturally go back to the techniques you're already good at.

Instead, pick something that needs work.

- Play your weaker guard.
- Work the pass you've been learning.
- Start in a bad position.
- Hunt for one specific technique.

You might get passed.
You might get submitted.
That's okay.

Training is where you're supposed to make mistakes.

Don't measure every round by whether you won.

The question is:
“What did I get better at today?”

JIU-JITSU IS A PRACTICE OF SELF-MASTERY

Jiu-Jitsu teaches you very quickly that you can't improve something you don't understand.

Why do you panic when you're mounted?

Why do you rush submissions?

Why do you avoid certain training partners?

Why do you get frustrated when a technique doesn't work?

The first step is just noticing it.

The more you understand your own patterns, the more control you gain over them.

That's true on the mats.

And it's true everywhere else.

Awareness comes before improvement.

The best martial artists never stop learning.

Whether it's wrestling, judo, jiu-jitsu, boxing, or another martial art, every style offers lessons that can improve your game.

A white belt mindset isn't about rank.
It's about staying curious.

Stay humble. Keep learning. Keep growing.
