Lifestyle Challenge: Boost Your Brain!

I am SUPER excited about our challenge this week!! One of the best things you can do to ensure your brain stays healthy as you get older is to take care of your body in general – eating a balanced diet and getting enough exercise (especially cardio). 🧠🧠

👉 But studies show that people who have the fewest problems with brain-related aging disorders (like dementia or Alzheimer’s) also engage in activities that mentally challenge them.

This week we’re going to challenge our brains – and have fun in the process!

Time to get out your dancing shoes, jigsaw puzzles, a deck of cards, chessboard, video games (gasp! the more complex, the better) or pick up tickets to the symphony.

According to a study published in the journal “Clinical Geriatric Medicine,” older people who had the highest cognitive function engaged in three different kinds of activities:

🔎those that challenged them intellectually
🤹‍those that challenged them physically
🎉and also those that involved social interaction

They did puzzles, used their computers, read books, played bridge and board games, danced and played musical instruments. They also continued their education and had careers that challenged them intellectually.

They also got physical… and participated in regular exercise and gardening. And they headed out to cultural events, traveled, and socialized with family and friends on a regular basis.

This week let’s pick a new activity: doing a crossword puzzle / sudoku, learning choreography to a new song (check out The Fitness Marshall for some fabulous moves on YouTube!), playing a video game, or learning something new (like math, a foreign language, or playing a musical instrument).
