There’s a big difference between training a domesticated horse and a wild horse.
When you take on a wild horse, you’re not just teaching it how to carry a rider. You’re teaching it that humans can be trusted, that pressure doesn’t always mean danger, and that calm communication is possible.

It takes patience, consistency, confidence, and a whole lot of time. You start with the basics — getting the horse comfortable with your presence, learning to lead, accepting touch, responding to pressure, and gradually becoming comfortable with saddling and other new experiences.

You can’t rush the process. A wild Mustang has spent its life relying on instinct and looking out for itself. Every new step has to be earned.

The goal isn’t to overpower the horse. It’s to build a partnership where the horse understands what you’re asking and willingly chooses to work with you.

And when that day finally comes — when that once-wild Mustang calmly accepts a saddle, carries a rider, and confidently walks forward — it’s an incredible feeling.

It’s not just a horse becoming rideable.

It’s trust being built, one step at a time.

One of the most important parts of training a horse is teaching them that the world doesn’t always look the same or feel the same.

A horse can be calm and confident at home, but put them somewhere new—with different sights, sounds, footing, people, horses, and distractions—and suddenly everything can feel like a big deal.

That’s why exposing your horse to different atmospheres during training is so valuable.

Take them to different arenas, trail systems, shows, clinics, new environments, and even places with more activity than they’re used to. Give them the opportunity to process new experiences while you’re there to provide guidance and reassurance.

The goal isn’t to overwhelm them or “see what they’ll put up with.” It’s to gradually build confidence, trust, and adaptability.

A horse that learns how to stay relaxed and listen to their rider in different environments becomes a much more confident and dependable partner.

Training isn’t just about teaching your horse what to do—it’s also about teaching them how to handle the world around them.

Expose. Educate. Build confidence. Repeat.

Before you get in the saddle, get your horse’s attention……

One of the most important things we can teach our horses is that being with us starts before we ever put a foot in the stirrup.

Take a moment to connect. Ask your horse to acknowledge you, soften, listen, and be present. Watch their body language. Are they relaxed and tuned in, or distracted, tense, looking elsewhere, and mentally somewhere else?

That few minutes on the ground can make a big difference once you’re in the saddle.

A horse that is paying attention is better prepared to listen to your cues, respond to changes, and stay connected with you. More importantly, taking the time to establish that connection can help create a more thoughtful partnership for both horse and rider.

Don’t just climb on and hope you have their attention. Take the time to earn it first.

🐴 A good horse doesn’t forget—but that doesn’t mean we should stop reminding them.

Just like us, horses benefit from regular refreshers of the skills they’ve learned. Taking time to revisit the basics helps keep communication clear, reinforces good habits, builds confidence, and keeps both horse and rider working together safely and smoothly.

Training isn’t something we simply check off a list. It’s an ongoing conversation. A little review here and there can make a big difference in keeping your horse responsive, confident, and ready for whatever comes next.

Sometimes fast is slow, and slow is fast.
With horses, you learn pretty quickly that rushing doesn’t always get you where you want to go.

You can push for the perfect ride, hurry through the training, or demand an answer right now—but sometimes the fastest way forward is to slow down. Take a breath. Listen to your horse. Build trust. Give them time to understand.

A quiet step forward built on confidence is worth far more than ten rushed steps backward.

Horses have a way of reminding us that progress isn’t always about speed. Sometimes, slow is the fastest way to get there.

Take your time. Build the partnership. Trust the process.
