Wahlfield Mountain Bike Trails

More changes coming to the mountain bike trails at Wahlfield! Yesterday, with a big help from Kent County Parks, we got started on the South Parking Lot bypass so that once completed, you will no longer have to ride through the South Parking Lot on the main loop. This will be a mix of reconfiguring existing trail and adding some new sections including some brand new areas along Mill Creek. You will still be able to access the trails from the South Parking Lot but from one trailhead instead of two (current "Red" entrance, 'Yellow" will be closed off). We'll post trail days to help get this built once scheduled.

The rain missed Wahlfield last night and the trails are riding great! Enjoy all the crazy fungus, it's that time of year. And if you're looking for something to do, go help Barney Rider work on Sawtooth at Merrell Trail (WMMBA) this morning, because he needs the help and you need some trail karma!

As any good trail builder will tell you, trails are never truly done. And that couldn't be more the case than with Wahlfield. But after over 13 years of building, we think we're down to our last big project (getting started this fall). That got us thinking about all the ways the trail has changed over the years so here is a little timeline. As always, thank you to all of the volunteers over the years and the hundreds of hours they've spent carving these trails out of cornfields, clay, and poison ivy! 😁

2013: Construction starts adding sections Goat Path, Fall of Utah, Hard Cider, Berry Patch (Original), and Corndogs

2014: Bartlett Ridge V1 and Swimming Holes added completing the main loop

2015: Wild Onions added

2016: Oxbow Run added (10 year anniversary!)

2017: Why Knot added and Perrin Flow Trails built.

2019: Field of Dreams extension added

2020: Bartlett Ridge V2 built.

2022: BirdDog V1 and Woodchuck added

2023: North Parking Lot built by Kent County Parks

2024: North Trailhead and Archway, Kids Pump Track, and No Problems refresh completed

2025: Berry Patch Kids Loop added

2026: BirdDog V2 and North Loop added

2026/2027: South Parking Lot Bypass

Wahlfield got a haircut today! If you see Joe & Sue Baltruzak, say thanks and buy them some tacos, because sweet mountain bike trails don't just happen. It takes all kinds of folks who give up their free time so we can have great trails. Thanks Joe & Sue, that's REAL trail karma!

Wahlfield got over 2 inches of rain last night, but it's been super dry. Please give the trails until late afternoon to dry out before you ride, trail run or hike. Remember, if you are leaving tracks, turn back. Don't ride mud. Thanks!🙂

The Adventure Team Grand Rapids Area has only two more practices, tonight and next Tuesday, from 6pm - 8pm. Where has the summer gone! 😭 Expect trails and the North Parking lot to be busy during these times.

Join naturalist and Kent Co. Watershed Specialist Joel Betts at Wahlfield Park Thursday August 13 @ 7PM, starting from the new Dog Park (middle north parking lot) to walk the trails (2-3 mi). Learn about the plants, birds, fish, and aquatic insects that live in and around Mill Creek, along with the challenges the creek faces from human impacts in its watershed. Ever get the feeling you’re being watched? This Blue Heron was walking the trails today out by the flow trails.

The Allium Tricoccum, or Ramps, are just starting to bloom so enjoy the show. The trails are in great shape thanks to our Trail Adopters, so get outside, because it summertime!
