Every newborn in the US has their hearing tested within days of birth. It’s routine. Most parents barely think about it.

Researchers at Michigan State University now believe that same test could contain early signals of autism — years before any diagnosis would currently be possible.

The test measures how the inner ear and brainstem respond to sound. Some autistic people process auditory information differently, and those differences may be detectable from birth. If the research holds, it could mean identifying autistic children at the earliest possible stage — giving families access to support from the very beginning.

The infrastructure is already there. The question is whether the data has been there all along.
