This is unacceptable. Cincinnati Public Schools cut 12 social work positions amid a $58 million budget shortfall. Now, four bilingual social workers who previously supported English-learning students across multiple schools have been reassigned as building social workers- leaving many immigrant students without specialized, culturally and linguistically responsive support. More than 2,000 CPS students are English learners. At Western Hills High School alone, more than 200 students are learning English, yet the school will begin the year without a dedicated bilingual social worker. Students are navigating trauma, family separation, immigration enforcement, language barriers, and fear. Taking trusted social workers away from them is not a solution; it is a failure to fund what we already know works. If we genuinely want students to feel safe, remain engaged, and succeed academically, the answer is clear: fund social workers in schools. Every student deserves access to a qualified school social worker, and multilingual communities deserve professionals equipped to meet their specific needs. Budgets reflect priorities. Ohio must stop treating school social workers as expendable and invest in the professionals who help students and families survive crises, access essential resources, and thrive.
