FUN FACT!

Former Heavyweight Champion of the World Leon Spinks, who defeated Muhammad Ali in 1978, used to volunteer right here at the Columbus Rescue Mission.

Leon defeated Ali on February 15, 1978, in only his eighth professional fight and became the heavyweight champion of the world. He finished his professional boxing career with a record of 26 wins, 17 losses, and 3 draws, with 14 knockouts.

Later in life, Leon spent time volunteering here at the Rescue Mission and would even help cook meals for our guests.

The signed photo in this post shows Leon after his victory over Muhammad Ali.

Leon Spinks passed away on February 5, 2021, at the age of 67.

Just a neat piece of history connected to the Columbus Rescue Mission that a lot of people probably don’t know about.
