“Lower back shirt wrinkles”

When?
Deadlift setup

What does this mean?
During the setup for deadlift, when the lifter pushes their chest out, depresses their scaps, and engages their lats, wrinkles will appear on the lumbar region of their shirt.

Although it’s impossible for the lifter to actually see this, mentally visualizing this may help them understand the positioning.

Additionally, it may help athletes watching a lifter demonstrating this.

I hope you found this valuable. If so, or tag someone who needs to see it.

“Eyes up, chest out”

When?
Setting up for sn**ch or clean

What does this mean?
Often when working with beginner lifters, I’ve noticed that they tend to look down at “where the action is” - feet, hands, barbell, etc.

This places them in a weak position; high hips, lack of engagement through the core, no visual focus.

By setting their eyes on the horizon, the athlete is able to focus on a single spot throughout the entire lift. By pushing their chest out, they engage their lats and create stiffness throughout the core.

Additionally, a by product of these two actions usually fixes the hip height and draws the hips into a more powerful position.

I hope you found this valuable. If so, or tag someone who needs to see it.

“Elbows out” - picked up from Greg Everett

When?
Set up for clean and sn**ch

What does this mean?
“In the starting position and pull of the sn**ch and clean, we want the arms somewhat internally rotated to direct the bony points of the elbows toward the outside.

This position is unnecessary for the first and second pulls—its purpose is to improve the mechanics of the third pull.

Internal rotation allows the lifter to more easily pull the elbows up and out to the sides—this motion helps accelerate the change of direction and movement under the bar while maintaining proximity of the bar and body.” Greg Everett

“Up into down” - picked up from Greg Everett

When?
Timing at the top of the pull for the clean and sn**ch

What does this mean?
“In the sn**ch and clean, we break the pull into segments as a way to teach and learn, but in ex*****on we want a fluid, uninterrupted motion.

We often get a delay in the transition between the top of the pull and the effort to move under the bar and this means time for the bar to lose momentum and reduce our window for getting under it.

Think of the sn**ch and clean as a single continuous motion.

Not up… and THEN down.

But, up INTO down.

You can try visualizing it as a narrow elliptical motion through the top, rather than an out and back trip to the top of the pull.” - Greg Everett

“Push before you pull” - picked up from Chris Orcutt

When?
Sequence for sn**ch and clean

What does this mean?
Push with your legs before you pull under the bar.

During the first and second pull of the sn**ch, focus on pushing with your legs against the ground.

Upon reaching full extension through the hips and knees, pull yourself under the bar.

This cue can be especially helpful for lifters who pull the bar with their arms before reaching full extension with their hips and knees.

“Knees go back - Knees go forward - Knees extend”

When?
Describing the 1st and 2nd pull of the clean or sn**ch

What does this mean?
In the setup of the clean or sn**ch, the knees will be slightly in front of the bar.

During the 1st pull the back angle will stay relatively the same, and the knees will move behind the the bar. This will allow the bar to travel in a relatively straight line from the floor to above the knee.

At the initiation of the second pull, the knees will move forward of the bar as the body repositions to allow the application of vertical force.

As the lifter continues to drive through the legs, the second pull finishes with the knees extending, along with the hips.

“Hop, Drop” - picked up from Michaela Breeze - Weightlifting Technical Coach

When?
Sn**ch and clean

What does this mean?
A common error during extension is the lifter throwing their head and shoulders backwards and driving the hips forward, which also sends the bar forward.

In order to stay balanced, the lifter must then whip the bar back towards the midline, in order to stay balanced.

The movement of the hips should be vertical, similar to a hop. Then immediately dropping down into the receive position. “Hop, Drop”

“Hips extend then flex”

When?
The transition from 2nd pull to 3rd pull of the sn**ch and clean

What does this mean?
“It’s not just about violent long extension.

It’s about how you can extend and then flex again.”

In an effort to receive the bar in a strong and stable position, the hips must flex just as aggressively as they extended during the 2nd pull.

I hope you found this valuable. If so, or tag someone who needs to see it.
