According to American Red Cross guidelines, pools must be cleared immediately at first sound of thunder or sight of lightning.

Key Red Cross Lightning Procedures
* Clear the Pool: Immediately vacate the water and the pool deck upon hearing thunder or seeing lightning

* 30-Minute Rule: Wait at least 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning or roll of thunder before returning to the water
