FYSA | CPW enacts voluntary fishing closures for sections of South Platte watershed, Clear Creek

DENVER — Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Northeast Region is enacting a series of voluntary fishing closures due to low flows and high water temperatures. The closures will be in effect from noon to midnight in order to reduce stress on fish populations during the hottest parts of the day. List of voluntary fishing closure locations, effective immediately:

South Platte River (Dream Stream) - closed from Eleven Mile Reservoir inlet upstream to Spinney Mountain Dam. Current flows are 94 cfs (cubic feet per second), compared to historical average flows of 190 cfs. Water temperatures are reaching daily maximums over 73 degrees Fahrenheit.

South Platte River - closed from Spinney Mountain Reservoir inlet upstream to the confluence of the Middle and South Forks. Current flows are less than 10 cfs, compared to historical average flows of 170 cfs.

Middle Fork South Platte River - closed from confluence with the South Fork upstream to Highway 285. Current flows are less than 10 cfs, compared to historical average flows of 110 cfs.

South Fork South Platte River - closed from confluence with the Middle Fork upstream to Highway 285. Current flows are less than 10 cfs, and historical average flows are around 40 cfs.

Clear Creek - closed from Vanover Park in Golden upstream to Tunnel 1 Trailhead. Current flows are around 80 cfs, compared to historical average flows of 240 cfs. Water temperatures are reaching daily maximums over 73 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grey Reef Weekend Fishing & Weather Update

The Grey Reef Dam is currently releasing 2,204 CFS, keeping flows consistent and fishing conditions favorable heading into another hot Wyoming weekend.
Dry fly fishing continues to steal the show during the cooler parts of the day.

Early mornings and the last few hours before sunset have been producing the most consistent surface action, with caddis, Yellow Sallies, PMDs, and tricos all bringing trout to the top. As the afternoon heat builds, expect fish to slide into deeper seams, drop-offs, and softer water where nymph rigs and streamers become your best bet.
Terrestrial fishing continues to improve as well. Windy afternoons are pushing more grasshoppers into the river, making hopper patterns an increasingly reliable option along grassy banks.

Weekend Weather
Saturday: Mostly sunny and hot with a high of 98°F. A little patchy smoke is possible early in the morning before clearing. Southwest winds 7–13 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.

Sunday: Another hot summer day with sunshine and a high of 99°F. Afternoon breezes will continue, with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday evening after a full day of fishing.

If you're planning to fish this weekend, get on the water early. The first few hours after sunrise will offer the coolest temperatures, lighter winds, and some of the best opportunities for rising trout before the midday heat sets in.
