There really is no such thing as an overnight sensation.

Anyone you’ve ever watched seemingly come out of nowhere in the fight world had already spent years in the gym before you knew their name. Thousands of hours doing the quiet work when nobody was watching. Building skills, making mistakes, getting better, and showing up again. Nobody gets to that level, or is even prepared when the opportunity finally comes, without spending years building the foundation first. Everyone wants to get good very quickly, but there is not cutting corners. You have to do all the good fun work, and all the sh*tty things you don’t want to do as well.

It’s a lot like bamboo. For years, most of the growth is building the root system underground’s before you ever see much above the surface. Then when it finally takes off, it grows exponentially and looks like it happened overnight. People see the breakthrough. They rarely see everything that had to be built first underground.

How you spend your time matters, especially on the days you don’t feel like going. Those days count too. You also need proper training from real coaches. Are you building a foundation strong enough to support what you say you want, or are you dreaming about something you’ll never have because you’re not willing to do the quiet work required to get there?

That part is up to you.

Taylor and Dave competed at AGF in St. Louis today, and both came away with some hardware.

Dave lost on a last-second technicality in a really close match that could have gone either way.

I was thoroughly impressed with Taylor’s performance today. The first time through her main bracket, we had some tactical errors that we talked about and adjusted before going back to the Challengers bracket, where she ran into the same opponents. When she competed against them again, she made those adjustments and showed massive improvement despite being tired. That’s what I was happiest about today.

She made the choice to step up and go back out there stronger instead of wilting like a lot of people would have. That was awesome, and that was the biggest win of the day for me.

She also went up a division to challenge herself, and I think she learned exactly the lessons I wanted her to learn from doing it.

Really proud of both of you!

This is what a normal week of training at Legacy looks like.

Striking, No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, Gi Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA.

We have people here with years of experience and people who had never trained before walking through our door. You don’t have to already know what you’re doing to start. You just have to be willing to show up and learn something every day.

We take the coaching seriously. We work on fundamentals, build on what we’ve already learned, and get a lot of repetition so things actually start to make sense and become natural.

We work hard, but we also have a good time in here. I want this to be somewhere you enjoy training and enjoy the people you’re training with.

We’ve seen a lot of improvement from the people who have been consistently showing up, and it’s been pretty cool watching the team and culture develop along with it.
