What is the NUMBER ONE MOST IMPORTANT ASSET of your company?
It's your people!
So you better learn how to manage them well!
There are literally thousands of books on leadership and management, SO MUCH NOISE! How can you simplify?
This 'info overload' age that we live is exactly why I absolutely love the book "How to be a Great Boss"
In it -> there is a breakdown of 5 Practice to be a great Manager. That's right -> 5!!! KEEP IT SUPER SIMPLE!
"Effective leadership is putting first things first. effective management is discipline, carrying it out." - Stephen Covey (Wickman, 2016, p. 79).
Not only do great bosses lead well, but they also manage well! When both of those are in place, you get a stronger outcome of true accountability!
L + M = A!
(effective) Leadership + (effective) Management = (stronger) Accountability!
Here is how do most bosses think....
They want to know how to hold their direct reports accountable. The fact is you can't! People are people and they will do what they want when they want.
Management Practice #2 is focused on Clear Communication. Here are a few key insights around this idea:
-Make sure everyone is in synch, aligned, and unified!
-Practicing asking, listening, and seeking to understand!
Here are 4 Methods to Eliminate Assumptions:
1) Use the Two Emotions Approach
-Invite your team member to share two emotions with you about the situation. One positive, one negative. Listen carefully. Reflect back what you heard them say. Then share your own. This helps clarify how they feel and helps them have a safe space and place to honestly share what's going on.
2) Use a Coach Approach
-A Coach Approach is a way to approach people and problems. At it's core, the coach approach is all about asking questions, listening, reflecting, and drawing out what they think they should do. It's a way to generate ownership and develop empowerment. It's a powerful way to help them get where they want to go.
-The general rule of thumb when using a coach approach is the 80/20 for listening and talking. You want to get them talking about 80% of the time which means you are listening 80% of that time.
-For them to talk, you have to get good at asking curious, open-ended, and/or clarifying questions. How do you ask good questions? Good listening!
Here is why this works:
“Questions cause people to think in NEW WAYS from NEW PERSPECTIVES” (Webb, 2019, p. 12).
“If we help a person discover something for themselves, they will own it” (Webb, 2019, p. 36).
3) Use Reflection to clarify understanding (Echoing)
-The key here is to help them clarify. It goes with listening and speaking.
-A great combo question to check for understanding is:
"What did you hear? What does it mean?"
4) Don't assume! Constantly clarify and confirm! OVERCOMMUNICATE!
