THINGS FAMILIES SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CREMATION

Grief is already hard enough. You deserve to understand your options before making decisions.

Ask about direct cremation.
Direct cremation is generally a lower-cost option because it doesn't require a viewing or traditional funeral service. Ask for an itemized price list so you know exactly what you're paying for.

You don't have to purchase an expensive casket for direct cremation.
A traditional casket is not required. An alternative cremation container, which may be made from materials such as cardboard or fiberboard, can be used.

Ask whether witnessing is available.
Some crematories allow family members to be present for part of the cremation process. Policies and fees vary, so ask your provider what options they offer.

Cremated remains aren't simply "ashes."
After cremation, the remaining bone fragments are processed into the material families receive as cremated remains. The amount varies from person to person.

Know the rules before scattering.
Where cremated remains can be scattered depends on the location. Private property, parks, public lands, and waterways can have different requirements. Always check before scattering.

Most importantly ASK QUESTIONS.
Ask for prices in writing. Ask what is required and what is optional. Ask about less expensive alternatives. You are allowed to understand your choices before saying yes.
