Tonight, a five-year-old will look for his parents in the crowd, take a deep breath, and do something that scares him.
That moment deserves your attention.
He has been practicing since July. He knows the moves. Walking onto the floor with everyone watching??????
That still takes courage.
He might hesitate. He might forget what comes next. His coach will be there to help him regroup, and he’ll have a chance to discover something about himself:
“I can feel nervous and still take the next step.”
As parents, we want that for our kids. The confidence to raise a hand. Introduce themselves. Try out for the team. Keep going after a mistake.
That confidence grows through experiences they can point to and say, “I did that.”
Tonight’s testing gives them one of those experiences.
Every belt represents weeks of showing up, listening, practicing, and working through frustration. You’ve seen some of that work at home. Tonight, you get to watch your child put it into action.
At Evolve, this is what child development through martial arts looks like.
Parents, when your child comes off the floor, give them the hug. Celebrate the achievement.
Then ask:
“I loved watching you. What part are you proudest of?”
Give them a second to answer. You might hear about a move they finally remembered or the moment they wanted to stop and kept going.
Let them tell you what tonight meant.
They earned the belt. Help them recognize the strength they’re building along the way.
