In 2021, the International Code Council mandated that certain public buildings must include at least one automatic door. The catch? Each state must individually adopt the 2021 IBC—and so far, only 18 have. Is your state up to code? Check our live tracker to find out: https://www.aaadm.com/ibc-adoption-tracker/index.html
American Association of Automatic Door Manufacturers
The American Association of Automatic Door Manufacturers (AAADM) is a trade association of manufacturers of automatic pedestrian door systems.
AAADM was founded in 1994 with the following mission: to advance the interests of the automatic door systems industry; to increase education, training and professionalism among installers and service providers; and to generally promote the safe use of automatic doors.
The CDC reports that older adults have the highest rates of disability, with mobility challenges being the most common nationwide. To support an aging population, universal design is non-negotiable. Automatic doors are essential infrastructure—eliminating heavy entry barriers, reducing physical strain, and guaranteeing seamless access in senior-frequented environments. When Starbucks launched its first Inclusive Spaces Framework store, they proved that features like automatic doors and wide paths don't just help the 1 in 4 Americans with a disability. They benefit everyone—from parents with strollers to customers with their hands full. True hospitality means looking past the bare minimum of the ADA to create spaces that welcome every guest instinctively.
