If you have been thinking about Senior Strength for Better Walking, I want to make a case for starting now.
Here is why timing matters.
Fall and winter in Ohio are real. The weather changes, and the days get shorter.
The motivation to get outside and move drops significantly, and for older adults especially, those months can quietly undo months of progress if there is no consistent routine in place.
The program I built on Udemy is designed specifically for this.
Four complete 20-minute workout routines. All doable at home, no equipment needed.
If that sounds like something you or someone you love needs right now, this is the link: https://www.udemy.com/course/senior-strength-for-better-walking/

Ever been in a conversation about back pain and heard someone throw out "L5" or "C2" and had absolutely no idea what it meant?
I wrote a quick breakdown on the blog to demystify all of it.
The spine has three main sections: cervical at the top, thoracic in the middle, and lumbar at the bottom. Each letter in those combinations refers to one of these sections, and the number tells you which bone is involved.
More importantly, I also shared the best exercises to keep each part of the spine healthy and mobile.
Simple movements you can do at home that support your back, your posture, and your everyday independence.
Worth a read if back health is something on your mind.

National Senior Citizens Day was established to recognize the contributions of older adults and raise awareness of the challenges they face.
I want to add something to that.
Older adults are not just recipients of recognition and awareness. They are actively, stubbornly, beautifully fighting for their own independence every single day.
I am honored to be part of that fight.
Happy Senior Citizens Day to every client, every family member, and every older adult who keeps showing up.

One of my favorite things about summer is the farmers' markets.
There is one near me in Columbus that I try to get to when I can. The produce is incredible, and honestly, just walking through it feels good.
Something I talk about with clients more and more is the connection between what we eat and how we move. They are not separate conversations.
For older adults especially, protein intake is one of the most underrated parts of the health picture. Most people are not getting nearly enough, and without adequate protein, building and maintaining the muscle we need for strength and balance becomes significantly harder.
So here is my August challenge for you.
Walk to your local farmers market if you can, or drive if you need to.
Movement and nutrition work together.
If you want to talk about what a realistic approach looks like for you, I am always happy to connect.

Today is Baby Boomers Recognition Day, and I want to speak directly to this generation for a moment.
You built things, you showed up for your families, your communities, your careers, and your country for decades.
I work with Baby Boomers every single day across Ohio, and what I see in this generation consistently is a level of determination and grit that honestly takes my breath away sometimes.
When they commit to something, they do it. When they believe something matters, they follow through.
Your independence, your mobility, and your ability to keep living life on your own terms. That is worth fighting for, and it is more attainable than most people in this generation realize.
Happy Baby Boomers Recognition Day!

A couple of months ago, I woke up, and my thumb would not bend.
What started as a sore thumb turned into two braces, two rounds of steroids, and eventually outpatient surgery for Trigger Thumb.
The recovery was smooth, and I am fully back to normal.
But the experience reminded me of something I say to clients all the time.
Getting older does not mean accepting every limitation as permanent. There are often real solutions available if we take the time to look for them and speak up.
I wrote about the whole experience on the blog, including what Trigger Finger actually is and how it is treated.
If you or someone you know has dealt with something similar, this one is worth reading: https://kosher-fitness.com/2026/07/15/are-you-feeling-triggered/

I want to tell you about someone who has been on my mind lately.
Her name is Flo Gurwin. I met her when I moved to Columbus back in 2002.
She was a regular at Saturday morning services at the congregation where I served as Rabbi.
What I remember most vividly is the moment I found out how old she actually was. I would have guessed she was 10 to 15 years younger than her real age. I was genuinely shocked.
Flo is 93 years old. She is still active.
Still teaching fitness classes at her local JCC, still showing up every day.
She was recently featured in The Ohio State University alumni magazine for exactly that reason.
I think about Flo a lot when clients tell me they think they are too old to start.
Genetics may play a role, but what Flo represents is something deeper than genetics. It is the accumulation of choices made over decades.
I wrote more about her on the blog. It is worth a read: https://kosher-fitness.com/2026/07/30/inspiration-from-flo/

Exciting news to share!
I recently had the opportunity to join Murphy McCammon on The Fitness Beginner Podcast. ποΈ
The Fitness Beginner Podcast is all about helping people get started on their fitness journey, and that mission aligns perfectly with what I do every day at At Home Senior Fitness.
We talked about some things that I feel strongly about and do not get discussed enough in the fitness world.
π Why the fastest-growing population in the world, adults 55 and up, is still being underserved by an industry that was never really built for them.
π How the connection between movement and mental health in older adults is real, significant, and deeply underreported.
π What families get wrong when they try to help an aging parent stay active, and what actually works instead.
π Why consistency will always beat intensity for this population, and why so many senior fitness programs have it completely backwards.
I am grateful to Murphy for having me on and for creating a space where these conversations can happen.
If you are someone who works with older adults, supports an aging parent, or is 55+ yourself and thinking about getting stronger, this episode is for you.

July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, and it is a conversation I think deserves more space in the senior fitness world.
Mental health challenges in older adults from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities are often underdiagnosed, underreported, and undersupported.
Cultural stigma, systemic barriers, and lack of access to culturally competent care all play a role.
What I know from my own work is this: movement is one of the most accessible tools we have. It does not solve everything but staying active, feeling strong, and maintaining independence can meaningfully support mental and emotional wellbeing.
Every older adult deserves care that meets them where they are. This month is a reminder to keep working toward that.

Cleveland people, we need to know. What is your go to spot downtown?
Drop it in the comments below and let us know what makes Cleveland home for you.
Because staying active and getting out into the city you love is one of the best things you can do for your body and your spirit.
And honestly, Cleveland gives us plenty of reasons to keep moving.
