September 13th Clemson Historic Picture And Trivia Question Of The Day: The Last Walkout

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV0fSOq3Vls

Today’s photo comes from Wright Bryan’s book, The Last Walk-Out, which tells the story of one of the most significant student protests in Clemson’s history.

In 1924, student morale at Clemson was at an all-time low, and tensions between the cadets and the administration were building.

The senior class announced that they would walk out if their demands were not met. The freshmen, sophomores, and juniors had already indicated that they would follow the seniors’ lead.

What began as a series of grievances would eventually lead to one of the most dramatic moments in Clemson’s early history.

Trivia Question
What was the origin of the complaints that led Clemson students to engage in the walk-out?

Today’s photo is from 1954 and shows the demolition of Barracks No. 1. You can see just how close the barracks were to Tillman Hall in this photograph.

Barracks No. 1 was one of the most significant buildings in the daily life of Clemson’s cadets. Its demolition made way for the construction of Johnstone Hall, forever changing this part of the Clemson campus.

Trivia Question
What was one of the central parts of Barracks No. 1 that every cadet, regardless of where they lived, knew about?

September 11th Clemson Historic Picture And Trivia Question Of The Day: Fall Of '68

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxg_GPa4h4E

Today’s photo is from 1968 and gives us a fantastic aerial view of the Clemson campus on a beautiful fall afternoon.

You can actually pin down the year by looking at the construction taking place in the center of the photo. Lever Hall is under construction, providing a great landmark for dating this aerial shot.

You can also see that Manning Hall has already been completed. Manning Hall was finished in 1967, just one year before this photo was taken. Meanwhile, Byrnes Hall has yet to be constructed. Byrnes Hall would be completed in 1970.

It’s always fascinating to look at these old aerial photographs and see how much the Clemson campus has changed over the years!

Trivia Question
Who was Lever Hall named for?
