Hitting Dumbed Down for Dummies-

07/14/2026

I’ve been accused of treating hitters differently.

You’re absolutely right.

The hitters who show up prepared…
Ask questions…
Work between lessons…
Compete…
And genuinely care…
They get more from me.

Not because they’re my favorites.
Because they’ve earned my investment.

I’ll give every hitter an opportunity.

But I can’t care more about your career than you do.

The athletes who bring effort every day will always get more of my time, my energy, and my best coaching.

That’s not playing favorites.

That’s coaching.

Deep is not Steep

The deeper the pitch, the smaller the window for a loopy attack angle.

That doesn’t mean swing flat.

It means the barrel has to work more directly through the pitch, not under it.

Depth changes the angle.

If you’re looking for a tee that can keep up with real training, this is it.

The Handy Tee features a 6-inch rubber tee topper that’s incredibly forgiving on mish*ts, so you’re not constantly replacing parts.

It also has a metal gooseneck that’s designed to flex. That little bit of built-in movement helps absorb bad swings instead of transferring all that force back into your arm.

Expandable from 32-42 inches long, you can safely work from farther away while still reaching pitches down in the zone, inside, outside, and everywhere in between—without moving a heavy tee every few swings.

More reps. More adjustability. Less downtime.

Apparently talking about barrel path is controversial now… so let’s make it worse. 😂

Today’s lesson is about two things:
• The plane of the pitch (high vs. low)
• The direction you release the barrel (pull side, middle, or opposite field)

The plane changes based on pitch height.
The release direction changes based on where the pitch is located.

Understanding those two things is what gives hitters adjustability instead of forcing the same swing on every pitch.

An Oldie but a Goldie.

Approach ➜ Power V
One of the biggest keys to a consistent swing is what happens from approach to Power V.

As the k**b turns toward the pitcher and into the path of the pitch, the barrel naturally falls behind your hands. We don’t need to flick it back to have it fall behind..DUH

From there, don’t throw the barrel at the ball.
Release it in the most direct line along the path of the pitch.

Some pitches require a slightly steeper path. Others require a flatter one. But the goal stays the same:
✔️ Keep the barrel below your hands through extension.

Approach = The barrel works to the side of the shoulder as the body turns toward the pitcher.

Power V = The release of the lag and extension of the barrel through the baseball.

Master that section of the swing, and you’ll give yourself a much better chance to create consistent contact, adjust to different pitch planes, and produce real power.

This is one of the greatest feelings a hitter will ever experience… and most players never learn it.

This drill has nothing to do with mechanics.
It has everything to do with ex*****on.

The pitcher mixes fastballs and slow balls.
Your only two rules:

⚾ Slow pitch or spin? Don’t roll it over.
⚾ Fastball? Don’t pull it.

Now you’re forced to recognize speed instead of guessing.

You’re training your eyes, your timing, and your approach—not just your swing.

This is one of my favorite two-strike drills because it teaches hitters to trust what they see instead of committing too early.
A great swing is important.
Knowing when to use it is what separates hitters.

Some of the best lessons don’t need an explanation.

Forget who’s swinging.

Watch what the swing is teaching you.

The demo tells the story.

The swing always tells the truth.

Stop drifting after you land.

A lot of hitters think they need to keep moving forward after foot plant to create power.

In reality, that forward drift often causes the barrel to work down through and under the ball.

Instead, rotate behind your contact point. Keep your head stable, create more space, and give the barrel a better path through the zone.

HEAD - down and back slightly OK✅
MOVING FORWARD AS YOU SWING❌

Stop asking if it’s a good drill.
Start asking if it’s a good skill builder.
Every exercise should answer a question:
• Does it improve intent?
• Does it improve approach?
• Does it improve quickness?
• Does it improve barrel path?
• Does it improve direction through the ball?
• Does it improve adjustability?
If the answer is yes, keep it.
If the answer is no, move on.
Don’t waste practice mastering exercises.
Master the skills that transfer to games.

“IT’S WHAT YOU DO WITH WHAT WE DO!!”
⚾️ Not every lesson needs to be about taking more swings.
👇 In this lesson, the hitter came in trying so hard to “stay closed” that he actually got weak to the baseball. That’s a common mistake.
🎥 One thing I encourage my hitters to do is record short recap videos after lessons. I don’t always make one for every player, but leaving with a quick explanation of what we worked on gives them something to review instead of guessing during the week.
➡️ “Stay closed” isn’t the goal.
💥 The goal is controlling the hands, creating direction through the baseball, and delivering the barrel with intent. If you’re so focused on staying closed that you lose freedom and direction, you’re making the swing harder than it needs to be.
📱 Video your lessons. Watch them often. Sometimes the most valuable rep you’ll get all week isn’t another swing—it’s reminding yourself exactly what you were trying to feel.
