The German word Schirm lies at the root of several terms associated with fencing and martial arts. These words share a fascinating etymological lineage that traces back to the concepts of a "shield," "protection," or "defense." Because the art of fencing is inherently concerned with both attack and defense, the term gradually evolved to describe swordsmanship before expanding into modern meanings such as "screen" and "umbrella."
The Linguistic Evolution
German – Schirm
Derived from the Old High German scirm, meaning a bulwark, shelter, or hide-covered shield. In modern German, Schirm refers to objects that provide protection, including an umbrella (Regenschirm) and a screen (Bildschirm).
Italian – Schermo / Scherma
Borrowed from the Germanic schirm/scirm and absorbed into the Romance languages. Originally denoting a shield or means of defense, it evolved into scherma, the Italian term for the art of fencing, and schermire, meaning to defend or parry.
Spanish – Esgrima
Developed from the Italian fencing tradition and related terminology. The verb esgrimir means "to wield" or "to handle a weapon," while esgrima became the Spanish word for fencing.
Filipino – Eskrima / Escrima
Introduced during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. The Spanish term esgrima was adopted and adapted by Filipino practitioners to describe their indigenous systems of stick, blade, and empty-hand combat.
English – Skirmish
The English word skirmish is also believed to share this family of words, tracing through Old French and Germanic roots connected with fencing, defense, and armed encounters. While its meaning shifted toward a minor battle or brief engagement, it retains the underlying martial concept of armed conflict and weapon use.
Together, these terms reveal a remarkable linguistic journey in which the simple idea of a shield or protection evolved into words describing fencing traditions across Europe and, eventually, the martial arts of the Philippines.
