Strength training isn’t dangerous for kids. Poor coaching is.

There’s a big difference between teaching a kid how to train and simply putting weight in their hands.

With younger athletes, our first goal is buy-in. We want training to be something they enjoy, something they look forward to, and something that teaches them that hard work can actually be rewarding.

From there, we build the foundation.

Can they control their body?
Can they squat, hinge, push, pull and brace?
Can they repeat good movement patterns?
Can they listen to a cue and make a correction?
Can they handle the resistance they’re currently using?

Then we progress.

And progressive overload doesn’t always mean adding another plate to the bar. It can mean better technique, more control, greater range of motion, more reps, a harder variation, or producing more speed and power.

The barbell isn’t step one.

It’s earned.

We’re not trying to find out how much weight a kid can lift today. We’re trying to teach them how to train, enjoy the process, build confidence, and develop habits they can carry for the rest of their lives.

Strong kids become capable adults.

That’s the goal.

THURSDAY COACH’S TAKE 🎙️

Your kid probably doesn’t need to wait until middle school or high school to start training. In fact, I think 8 to 10 years old is one of the BEST times to start.

And no, I’m not talking about loading up a barbell and seeing how much an 8 year old can lift.

After 10 years of coaching kids and athletes, I’ve become a huge believer in getting kids into a properly coached training environment early.

At 8 to 10, we have an opportunity to start developing coordination, balance, body awareness, movement skills, speed, agility and confidence.

But the physical side is only part of why I believe in it.

This is also when we can start teaching a lesson that goes WAY beyond sports:

What you do today affects who you become tomorrow.

You work.
You struggle.
You adapt.
You improve.

Eventually they begin to understand that the reward for today’s work might not come tomorrow. It might come months or even YEARS down the road.

Imagine learning that at 8 instead of 18.

Now give that kid 10 years to practice it.

That’s what I want youth training to build.

Not the strongest 8 year old.

Not a kid who peaks before high school.

A capable, confident and resilient young person who understands that consistent effort compounds.

Because eventually sports end.

But that mindset can follow them into school, work, relationships, health and someday even into how they raise their own kids.

We’re not just preparing kids for their next season.

We’re helping prepare them for life.

💥 MEET YOUR TRAINER MONDAY — KURT EVICK 💥

Kurt’s another one of those coaches who started out on the other side, as a Grif-Fit client.

He fell in love with the training, the community, and eventually decided he wanted to do more than just be known around here as “The Terminator.” 😂

When we were short-handed, Kurt stepped up. He wanted to help others, lead from the front, and give back to the same community he’d become a big part of.

He doesn’t get to coach as often as some of our trainers, but there’s a pretty good chance you’ll still find him at Grif-Fit usually working out for about 2 hours, helping somebody between sets, and casually doing something that makes the rest of us question whether he’s actually human.

And then there’s the Echo Bike…

For most people, it’s punishment.
For Kurt, it’s apparently a nice walk on the beach. 😂

Kurt leads by example. He trains hard, stays consistent, and is always willing to jump in and help when we need him.

We’re lucky to have The Terminator as part of the Grif-Fit crew. 💪🏼

Show Kurt some love in the comments! 👊🏼

💪 MEET YOUR TRAINER MONDAY — JOSH TONEY

Josh’s role at Grif-Fit has evolved quite a bit since he first joined our team.

He started out coaching both our adult classes and youth athletes, but as our athlete program continued to grow, we were able to expand our staff and move Josh into a role focused strictly on developing athletes.

Since then, we’ve watched a crazy number of young athletes come through his sessions, get stronger, move better, gain confidence, and take their game to another level.

What separates Josh is how he coaches.

His training style is different from what you’ll find at most places around here. He has an incredible ability to push athletes without losing them, motivate them when things get hard, and take complicated movements and break them down into simple cues they can immediately understand and apply.

He knows when an athlete needs to be pushed and when they need to be pulled back, always keeping the bigger picture in mind: building stronger, more explosive, more resilient athletes while keeping them healthy and on the field.

And his coaching doesn’t stop at Grif-Fit. Josh also works with soldiers on post, helping prepare and develop tactical athletes whose performance matters far beyond the weight room.

Josh has become a huge part of what we’re building with our athlete program, and we’re excited to see just how far he can continue taking it.

📚💪🏼 HOMESCHOOL FAMILIES — WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

We’re looking at adding a Homeschool Performance class at Grif-Fit on Monday, Wednesday & Friday at 11:00 AM.

The goal is simple — give homeschool kids a place during the school day to move, get stronger, build confidence, develop athletic skills, and have some fun doing it.

They don’t have to be an athlete to participate. We want this to be a place where kids of different ability levels can train, learn, compete, and get better together.

Right now, we’re just gauging interest. If we get enough families interested, we’ll make it happen!

👇 Help us spread the word!
Drop a 💪🏼 below if your family would be interested, and TAG a homeschool family who needs to see this!

The more interest we get, the sooner we can get this thing rolling. 🔥

MEET YOUR TRAINER MONDAY 🎉🏋️‍♀️

And the timing couldn’t be better because tomorrow is Amanda’s birthday! So before anything else, everybody make sure you wish her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOMORROW! 🥳

Amanda is our longest-tenured trainer at Grif-Fit. About nine years ago, she walked through our doors for an interview and she’s never missed a beat since.

Over the years, Amanda hasn’t just coached here. She’s treated this place like it’s her own. She’s earned the unofficial title of “Gym Mom,” and if you’ve spent any amount of time around Grif-Fit, you know exactly why. 😂

She genuinely cares about every person who walks through our doors. She’ll coach you, encourage you, correct you when you need it, check in on you, and probably make sure you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing even when you think she isn’t watching.

Amanda brings a level of knowledge, consistency, attention to detail, and genuine care that’s hard to replace. She’s been a huge part of watching Grif-Fit grow from what it was nine years ago into what it is today, and I’m incredibly thankful she’s been along for the ride.

Nine years later, she’s still showing up, still learning, still coaching, and still making Grif-Fit better.

🔥 FRIDAY NIGHT ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT 🔥

LUKE SUNDSTROM ⚾️

Luke is heading into his freshman year as a 1B/P, and this kid has a ton of potential.

He’s a big kid for his age and is still learning how to grow into his body and use it. The raw materials are there, size, strength, and athleticism. As his body awareness continues to improve and he learns how to move and control his body, I really believe he has the potential to become a force on the field.

What stands out most about Luke is that he wants to get better. He shows up ready to work, asks questions, listens, and continues to learn every time he walks through the door.

And this is only his first year of training.

Luke started in our NXT-GEN program this summer and has already grown so much in a short amount of time. He continues to train in our youth sessions and even jumps into our adult classes whenever he gets the chance.

Off the field, Luke is entering the Business Academy, taking all honors classes, and already has some big goals, play college baseball and eventually become an orthopedic surgeon.

He’s just getting started, and I’m excited to see what the next four years have in store for him.

Keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep working. 💪⚾️
