Cage Striking — Part Two 🥊

Now we’re taking our cage striking work and starting from the center of the cage.

We start with our striking and transition into the shot. Our opponent stuffs the takedown, so instead of forcing a bad position, we abandon it, come back up with the uppercut-hook, then immediately re-shot and drive them back to the fence.

As soon as we hit the cage, we attack. Knees immediately, maintain pressure, and continue building our offense.

If we get the underhook, we arm wrap behind.
If we get the overhook, we arm wrap in front.

Then we continue striking and working.

The real lesson here is learning how to transition when Plan A doesn’t work.

Striking → Shot → Stuffed → Striking → Re-shot → Cage Pressure → Striking.

MMA isn’t about one technique working perfectly. It’s about being able to transition from one opportunity to the next without stopping.

Build the patterns. Build the reactions. Keep working.

Stay focused. Stay motivated.

Takedowns

Learning martial arts at this age is about so much more than punches and kicks. It’s learning how to listen, how to try when something feels hard, how to keep going after a mistake, and how to be proud of every little bit of progress.

Some moments come with big smiles, some take a little extra courage, and some require a whole lot of focus. That’s all part of growing on the mats.

These are the moments we love seeing! From the smiles, the concentration, the nerves, and the little victories that remind us just how much they’re learning every time they step on our mats!

Cage Striking — Build the Damage Before the Takedown

Something I think is extremely important for amateur and developing professional MMA fighters is learning that cage work isn’t always about immediately chasing the takedown.

Sometimes the best option is to control, pressure, and score.

In this drill, we’re working from the underhook and developing a consistent striking pattern:

Body shots. Head shots. Knees. Pressure. Potential arm wraps. Then back to striking.

The goal is to get comfortable holding our opponent against the cage while continuously creating offense and scoring points. As those patterns become natural, we can start adding transitions that eventually lead us into our takedowns.

Don’t rush the position. Learn how to control it, create damage, and make your opponent work.

Stay focused. Stay motivated.

There’s something pretty awesome about watching hard work turn into pure excitement. One minute they’re grinding through the drill, pushing themselves and figuring it out and the next, you get THIS.

We want our students challenged, working hard and discovering just how much they’re capable of, while still having an absolute blast along the way. That “WAIT… I DID IT!” look we get from our students never gets old.

You don’t get better by staying comfortable.

You get better in the hard rounds. In the bad positions. In the moments when you’re tired, frustrated, and still expected to think, move, adapt, and keep working. Every round gives you another chance to sharpen your technique, test your composure, and become harder to break.

And somewhere between getting folded into questionable positions by your friends, stealing limbs, and fighting your way out of bad spots… you realize you’re having an absolute blast doing it. 😂

Work hard. Get uncomfortable. Keep learning. Keep showing up.

That’s a pretty good night of Jiu-Jitsu!

BECOME AN ASSET, NOT A LIABILITY.

You don’t get to choose when you’ll be tested but you do get to choose whether you’re prepared when it happens.

Coach Robison’s Law Enforcement / Corrections Seminar is built around practical Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for subject control, safety, decision-making under pressure, and learning how to stay effective when a situation becomes physical.

Because the goal isn’t to be the toughest person there. The goal is to be useful. When the pressure is real, your team doesn’t need you hoping you know what to do. They need you trained, composed, capable, and ready to work.

Useful to your partner. Useful to your department. Useful to the people you’re responsible for protecting. Become the person who stays composed when things get uncomfortable and the person with the tools to control the situation instead of adding to the chaos.

You’ll learn. You’ll drill. You’ll problem-solve. You’ll ask questions, and you’ll leave feeling more confident about the situations you might be faced with.

Coach Robison continues to give his time to seminars like this because training should serve a purpose, knowledge should be shared, and the men and women serving our community deserve every advantage we can help give them. Better preparation creates safer outcomes…for you, for the person beside you, and for everyone involved.

Train until you’re harder to overwhelm.
Prepare until you’re harder to surprise.
Become someone your team is better for having beside them.

Don’t wait until the moment matters to wish you had trained harder.

Be prepared. Be useful. Become an asset. Never quit.
