Do you need a triathlon bike to do a triathlon? Nope. 🚴🏼‍♀️

asked expert bike fitter Dean Sprague, owner of Pedal Power Perform Lab in Pacific Beach , and his answer is one I think a lot of new triathletes need to hear.

You do not need a fancy tri bike to get started in triathlon.

What matters more? Having a bike that fits your body properly.

Because an improper fit can make riding feel harder, less efficient, and way more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

If you’ve been thinking triathlon isn’t for you because you don’t have the “right” bike, let this be your reminder that getting started is a lot more accessible than people think.

The goal is not to have the most expensive setup. The goal is to get out there and ride. 🤍

❤️ San Diego Athletes — One of Our Own Needs Us Right Now
Many of you know Ric from triathlons, running events, and races throughout San Diego. Ric is also the incredible medical nurse at KOZ Events who has taken care of so many of you in the finish-line medical tent when you needed help.
Now Ric and Julian need us to take care of them.
Julian is still fighting cancer, but things have become much more difficult. He suffered a stroke two weeks ago, is back in the hospital, and his tumor is growing again.
Julian now needs significant assistance just to use the stairs. Because of that, Ric and Julian will have to move to a home that Julian can safely access before he can come home from the hospital.
And through all of this, Ric is working THREE jobs just trying to keep them afloat.
Three jobs — while worrying about Julian, spending time at the hospital, helping care for him, managing their everyday expenses, and now facing the added cost and stress of having to move.
No one should have to carry all of that alone.
Ric has spent years taking care of athletes in our community. If you've ever crossed one of our finish lines and seen Ric there ready to help, this is our opportunity to show her that this community is there for her, too.
🙏 Please donate today.
$10 helps. $25 helps. $50 helps. And if you're in a position to give more, right now it can make a tremendous difference in Ric and Julian's lives.
If hundreds of us give even a small amount, together we can help take some of the financial pressure off Ric so she can spend more of her energy on what matters most — being there for Julian while he continues to fight.
❤️ Please don't just scroll past this. Donate what you can, and then share this fundraiser with your friends, teammates, clubs, coworkers, and family.
Let's take care of someone who has spent so much time taking care of us.

What is Athena and Clydesdale in triathlon? 👀

Because if you’re new to the sport, there’s a good chance you’ve seen those words and thought… respectfully, what does that mean? 😅

Athena and Clydesdale are divisions some races offer for athletes in larger bodies, alongside the usual age group categories.

They’re there to create more inclusive racing opportunities for athletes in bigger bodies and give more people a place to feel like they belong in the sport. 🏊‍♀️🚴‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Because triathlon is not just for one body type.

And honestly, I think more people should know about them.

Because representation matters.
Access matters.
And people in all body sizes deserve to feel like triathlon is for them too. 🤍

Have you seen these before and did you know what these divisions meant?

One of the biggest surprises from the clinic? How much there is to learn about the bike. 🚴🏼‍♀️

asked David what stood out to him most from the day, and he said bike maintenance was way more involved than he expected.

He also shared that swimming is his biggest weakness right now… and honestly, that’s exactly why spaces like this matter.

Because nobody starts triathlon knowing everything.

You learn. You practice. You ask questions. You keep showing up.

And now he’s looking toward the October Mission Bay Triathlon 👏🏼

That’s how it starts. Not by feeling fully ready… but by deciding to begin.

If you’ve been thinking about trying a triathlon, let this be your reminder that you do not need to have it all figured out before you start. 🤍

Have a part of triathlon that intimidates you most? Drop it in the comments.
