It feels very quiet here today after Diamond Passing
Horses are deeply social, sensitive creatures. They notice the smallest changes in one another’s movement, posture and energy. We can’t know exactly how each horse experiences loss, but we can see when the herd’s familiar rhythm changes.
After Diamond died, we let her stay in the field overnight. Our horses are a close herd, and we wanted them to have time to see her and be near her if they chose. I especially wanted Harry, her loyal companion, to have that last night with her.
Today Harry is quieter, and he isn’t calling for her. Hearing a horse call for a companion who has gone is one of the most haunting sounds I know, and I had dreaded hearing it from him. I’m relieved that he seems settled right now, though we’ll keep watching over him and giving him the time he needs.
The whole place feels somber. We’ll keep the day gentle for the herd and for ourselves. Somehow, together, we’ll learn the new shape of life without Diamond. 🤍🐴
