Water never worries about finding its way down the mountain.

It doesn’t know what’s around the next bend.

It doesn’t fight every rock in its path.

Sometimes it goes around.
Sometimes it goes over.
Sometimes the obstacle changes its direction completely.

But it keeps moving.

There might be something worth learning in that.

We spend so much of life trying to control exactly where we’re going, how we’re going to get there, and what’s supposed to happen along the way.

Meanwhile, the river offers a simpler suggestion:

Keep moving. Adjust when you have to. Trust that there’s more than one way forward.

And maybe every once in a while, stop long enough to listen to the water.

I used to think “roughing it” meant giving up all the things that made me comfortable.

A warm bed. A hot shower. Cell service. Knowing exactly where we were going and when we’d be back.

My husband has always been the adventurous one. He’s the guy who sees a dirt road and wonders where it goes. I’m the one who wonders why we can’t just stay on the paved one.

But trip by trip, something has changed.

The places that once made me uncomfortable started making me feel alive.

I’ve stood beneath skies darker than I knew existed. Woken up to mountains outside the tent. Hiked farther than I thought I could. Sat beside lakes so still that the whole world seemed to stop with me.

And somewhere along the way, my comfort zone got bigger.

Maybe that’s the real gift of adventure.

You don’t have to become fearless. You just have to keep saying yes to places that make your world a little larger.

Put Tirol, Austria on your hiking list. 🥾

Deep in the Austrian Alps, Tirol is the kind of place that seems designed for exploring on foot — jagged mountain peaks, green valleys, alpine meadows, clear lakes and small villages tucked beneath some seriously impressive scenery.

And you don't have to be a mountaineer to experience it. Tirol has everything from relaxed valley walks and panoramic trails to challenging summit hikes and multi-day adventures through the Alps. For hikers who want to go farther, the region also has an extensive network of mountain refuges, making hut-to-hut trekking one of the classic ways to experience the landscape.

🏕️ Want to camp? Tirol has more than 80 established campgrounds, ranging from simple nature-focused sites to full-service campgrounds. A few worth researching include Naturcamping Kuprian in Ötztal, Camping Leutasch, Camping Mayrhofen, Camping Michelnhof near St. Johann in Tirol, and Eurocamp Wilder Kaiser. Many make excellent base camps for spending your days hiking and your evenings back beneath the mountains.

One thing to know before pitching your tent: wild camping isn't generally permitted in Tirol, so plan on staying at an official campground or, for multi-day mountain routes, one of the region's Alpine huts.

If your idea of a great vacation involves hiking boots, mountain air and waking up surrounded by the Alps, Tirol deserves a spot on the list.

BIG SUR IS OPEN AGAIN. 🌊🌲

For the past several weeks, this magnificent stretch of the California coast has been facing something far more serious than a road closure.

The Timber and Plaskett fires have burned more than 55,000 acres through the Big Sur region, bringing evacuations, closures and uncertainty to the people who live and work along this coast. Our thoughts remain with everyone who has been affected — and with the firefighters, first responders and crews who have been working in extraordinarily difficult terrain to protect these communities.

But this morning brought some very welcome news.

As of 6:00 a.m. September 14, Highway 1 is once again fully open through Big Sur, allowing travel all the way between Carmel and Cambria. Fire operations are still underway, so Caltrans is asking travelers to remain alert for emergency vehicles and crews along the route.

Anyone who has driven this road knows that Highway 1 through Big Sur is more than a way to get from one place to another.

It is one of those rare roads where you slow down because you want to.

Mountains falling into the Pacific.
Fog moving across the ridgelines.
Waves crashing against cliffs that have been standing here for millions of years.

Today, we're simply grateful that this incredible coastline is accessible again — and especially grateful to the people who helped make that possible.

If you're fortunate enough to visit in the coming weeks, travel gently, respect any remaining closures, give emergency crews plenty of room, support the local communities — and take a moment to appreciate just how special this place really is.

Five months. That was the deal I made with myself.

I quit my job, packed what I could carry, and bought a one-way ticket to Southeast Asia. No detailed itinerary. No idea exactly where I’d end up. Just five months to see what was out there.

A few weeks in, I found myself standing above a quiet valley as the sun broke through the mountains and the clouds drifted below me.

I think I made the right decision.

Sometimes nature forgets to be subtle. 🩷🏔️

A pink sky, a quiet river, and the mountains catching the last light near Vancouver. As the sun drops toward the horizon, its light travels through more of the atmosphere, scattering the shorter wavelengths and leaving behind those incredible reds, pinks, and purples.
