Steel drum and a singing bowl and the memories of our body.

Have you ever thought about those little stories our bodies could tell if we put words to it? To the shoulders, the knees, the bellies?

On days like today where the aches and pains seem to be louder than other days I like to imagine they are just speaking up so the back of the room can hear their tales of
- deep inside where there was the growing, carrying and the careful incision to extract three children
- knees that ran four half marathons
- a jaw that holds every rejection and nervous thought I have
- hands that have wiped tears and held faces to kiss and learned to make the best dinner rolls ever
- feet that have walked me down aisles of graduations, funerals, my wedding, and boldly into every first day and last day of so many things
- ears that love laughter, music, and the sound of leaves that crunch under feet when you walk an unmarked path in the woods

Oh this body.
The things it says to me everyday.

What would yours say?! This song isn't done so help me finish it ❤️👇

Join me at Yogaview Wilmette on Sunday October 18th for soft postures, songs, and a deep listening to the stories our trusty ole bodies tell us. (Link in Bio)

At the end of one of my classes a few weeks ago I had the most delightful conversation with Kelli Jo Kingsley McCarty who was in the same boat as me. She used to come with all these intentions to try to shut her brain off. To get it to stop thinking, but that is impossible. That isn't how the brain works. It was never and never will be about turning it off. It is about getting it to shift. Maybe it shifts from bright colors to muted oranges and pinks by imagining those colors. Or maybe we try to get it to just not be so damn loud all the time.

We don't shut the brain off. We try to get it to stop yelling frantically at us. Sometimes I feel like my brain is one of those people standing on the edge of the road trying to get you to pop in for an insurance quote- shouting, waving, spinning a sign, music blaring. It is overwhelming. So we shift away from stopping thoughts and we try to get them to not shout. To not be in all caps with lots of exclamation points. We imagine things slowing, the words becoming lower case. Double spaced. One word on each line.  What is your word? What if your word was sunset and all you did was breathe in and out and picture the sunset? What would happen?

We can't stop the thoughts. We can welcome them. We can soothe them. We can take them from ALL CAPS kind of aggression to subtle acceptance that they are what they are that day.

An intention truly is whatever you want it to be, but I find it most helpful to imagine it is your word, sound, or way to shift into a softer version of you.

When our children are young we track their age in weeks and months. They get a little bit older and we shift away from that and start saying how old they are in years. We do the same with ourselves, although I am prone to forgetting my exact age. I have passed 40 but am not yet 50. Lately if someone asks me how old I am I throw a number out and let Joe correct me if I am wrong.

And then there is this beautiful place where, if only briefly, you stop thinking about the passing of time as years and numbers and start to think of it as things you used to do, but do differently now. Or things you used to do, but don't do at all anymore.

There might be a progression and story behind it. A back injury or a 44 year old body that now gets motion sick when turned upside down.
I used to ride every ride at Six Flags, but now I am the proud keeper of phones and bags while I happily read my book on the wooden bench outside the Viper.

There is growth in someone that felt like rest was something for the tired. Something that needed to be earned.
I used to hate Savasana at the end of a yoga class but now I am mildly assaulted and annoyed every single time I hear those words 'start to come back into this room'. It's never long enough. (Yes, every time)

Other times those blanks get filled in and there is a tinge of sadness to them.
I used to send my older sister a happy birthday text every year, but now I don't talk to her at all.

There is gratitude that time is still being carved out to do something you love.
I used to sing on stages and at church but now I sing for the bedtime of a 12 and 13 year old, for people trying to find a little more calm, for karaoke nights, for myself in my basement.

There is a shift away from the panic of time passing into awe that it passed and brought us to right here. In this moment.

How would you fill in 'I used to..... But now I.....'?
