It is from these men that Judo spread throughout the Midwest. Anyone that learned waay back in the day or is practicing Judo today (and to some extent JuJutsu) in the Midwest area (especially Chicago) had to have learned it from or through these men. These were intense times too. Learning (as a minority) and teaching judo as an instructor wasn’t easy back then. The Black kids had to be taught clandestinely (late at night most of the time) and sometimes pose as janitorial staff (or other stereotypes) in order to get pass racial scrutiny and prejudices of the era. The uncanny thing is that Some of these instructors & Students are still VERY active today after all of these decades have past as are their students and ‘Grand’ students. The Chicago Judo & Jiu-Jitsu Institute,Inc has been open since 1938 without a single closure

Besides Being The Heavyweight Boxing Champ of The World, Jack Dempsey was an avid Wrestler & proponent of the Grappling Arts. He was also a Commander in The U.S. Coast Guard & The Director of physical education at Manhattan Beach. The techniques in these pics were influenced by Chief Petty Officer Bernard Cosneck who was Chief Instructor in hand to hand combat for the U. S. Coast Guard & who was also a Champion Collegiate Wrestler. Cosneck called what he taught to U.S. servicemen AMERICAN COMBAT JUDO which was a combination of his studies on Judo, Japanese JuJutsu, Boxing, Savate & of course Wrestling. It Focused on the rapid disposal of attackers rather than control methods. Dempsey & Cosneck along with sports writer Frank G. Menke teamed up to write the book “How To Fight Tough” which displayed Cosneck’s techniques & from which these pics were taken. Cosneck is the person The Champ is ‘Crunching’ in the pics

None of the greats could lift him no matter how hard they tried! Not Ali, Not Dempsey, Not Jack Johnson, Not even the great behemoth Dick The Bruiser! No One! He would let a heavyweight boxer, wrestler, or weightlifter attempt to lift him. At first, the lifter could raise him effortlessly. But then, he would employ his hidden move—a subtle grip on the lifter's wrist combined with a precise touch on the neck, near the carotid artery. Then it seemed it was impossible to lift him off the ground even a little! Who was he? John Frederic Coulon (February 12, 1889 – October 29, 1973) a Canadian-American professional boxer who was the world bantamweight
champion from March 6, 1910, when he wrested the crown from England's Jim Kendrick, until June 3, 1914, when he was defeated by Kid Williams in Vernon, California. His trick became legendary and people came from all over to witness it. He made a good living off of this feat and no one was able to duplicate it
