In 1992, Captain Bill Pinkney (1935 - 2023) became the first Black sailor to circumnavigate the globe solo by the southern route, passing through the world’s southernmost capes, including South America’s treacherous Cape Horn. With his 47-foot cutter, named Commitment, as a floating classroom, he dispatched video lessons to 30,000 inner city school children across America who followed his journey. Pinkney, himself, was raised in Chicago’s South Side and attended public schools. He rejected the statistics often associated with inner city Black youth and was later inspired to show similar children what they could accomplish with a basic education.
Later, Pinkney became the first captain of the Amistad schooner replica, teaching the sailing history of the slave trade and taking teachers to Africa for a Middle Passage crossing.
Pinkney was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2021. He leaves behind a legacy of Black excellence in both sailing and education.
