I’ve been taking long walks for stress but also know they’ve been cutting into my strength. Yesterday I cut the walk in half and today a boost of energy and strength under the barbell. S375 B250

Thanks to Nick for putting me onto L-Citruline.

I’m not much of a supplement person so I usually go the food route.

Today was my first time trying watermelon during the workout right after squats before bench. And it got me back together between lifts.

Watermelon contains L-citrulline, which the body converts into L-arginine and then nitric oxide. Nitric oxide supports blood flow and nutrient delivery when you’re deep into a hard session. It looks like citrulline is a better source of arginine then, well, arginine. I know that’s confusing.

L-citrulline → L-arginine → nitric oxide → blood flow

Citruline doesn’t break down as much as arginine and goes to the kidneys to be converted to arginine.

I’ve always noticed that being properly fueled makes a huge difference. From my own experience, a steak dinner the night before has been one of the best tools in my toolbox and several clients have experienced the same thing.

Red meat is rich in iron, creatine, arginine and many other vitamins and minerals while watermelon is a good source of citrulline.

Today, the watermelon during training was an experiment.

Heavy squats can take a lot out of you. Going from that into bench is where you find out what you’re really made of. Having something refreshing, easy to get down and potentially supportive of blood flow made a difference for me today.

Watermelon intra-workout. Recovery, blood flow and a better second half of the session? Maybe.
Now I’m curious: what supplements or foods do you swear by for training/energy?
