Death toll rises after devastating flash flood in Nepal and Tibet

The disaster that struck on August 26 on the border between Nepal and Tibet continues to leave a high number of victims and missing persons. The towns of Timure, Rasuwagadhi, and Syabrubesi are among the areas most affected by the avalanche of water, mud, and debris that swept down the Lhende River toward Bhote Koshi.

The figures released in recent hours vary and are still being updated. In Nepal, hundreds of deaths have been reported, and between 1,200 and 1,500 people are missing on both sides of the border, including tourists, hydroelectric project workers, and members of the security forces. An additional 265 people remain unaccounted for in Tibet.

The disaster left bridges destroyed, roads unusable, and communities isolated, while rescue teams work under challenging conditions. Authorities are investigating the origin of the landslide that blocked the riverbed and subsequently triggered the flood, in an operation involving land and air resources from Nepal and China.
