The search for 18-year-old Southwest Mississippi Community College football player Nolan Xavier Wells has indeed come to a tragic end, as authorities and his family confirmed that his body was recovered on Monday morning.
Nolan vanished on Saturday afternoon, July 4, 2026, during Independence Day celebrations on Horn Island, a barrier island about 10 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He had traveled to the island by boat with a group of friends.
Following a massive multi-agency search involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the United Cajun Navy, a National Park Service ranger discovered his body in the water off the northwest end of the island at approximately 8:45 a.m. on July 6.
While the Jackson County Coroner’s office noted that official DNA identification is pending, authorities stated the body perfectly matches Nolan’s description, and his heartbroken family has verified the devastating loss.
The exact cause of death remains unconfirmed, and an active investigation is ongoing to piece together his final movements.
His mother, Christine Wonsley, shared an emotional statement on Facebook thanking the community, volunteers, and law enforcement for their tireless rescue efforts, writing:"His father, our family, friends and I are absolutely devastated. My heart is broken for my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others. Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son. I ask that you please give me and my family time to grieve."She also noted that any GoFundMe campaigns currently circulating under his name are fraudulent and have not been authorized by the family.
Our deepest condolences go out to Nolan's family, his friends, and his teammates during this incredibly dark time.
