Let them experience it. 🌊
One of the hardest things for a parent during swim lessons is watching your child make a choice that you know might not work out.
Maybe they’re about to step off the step when they shouldn’t. Maybe they’re hesitant to let go. Maybe they jump in and immediately realize they don’t quite know what to do next.
And your instinct is to say, “Stop!”
“Don’t do that!”
“Come here, I’ll help you.”
I get it. That instinct comes from love.
But when you’re in a swim lesson, there is an instructor there whose job is to guide your child through those moments safely.
Sometimes, we need to let a child make the choice.
Let them step off.
Let them discover what happens when they do.
Let them need their teacher’s help getting back to safety.
That moment is the lesson.
We aren’t trying to scare children or put them in danger. We are creating controlled opportunities for them to experience water, make decisions, problem-solve, and learn that their choices have consequences.
And sometimes the outcome is beautiful:
They try it again.
They gain confidence.
They realize, “Oh… I can do this.”
And sometimes they decide, “Nope. I don’t like that.”
That’s okay, too.
Either outcome gives us something to work with.
What we don’t want is for a child to learn that every time the water feels uncomfortable, Mom or Dad will step in and remove the experience for them.
Because water literacy isn’t just knowing how to swim when everything goes perfectly. It’s developing the skills, confidence, awareness, and decision-making to respond when things don’t go perfectly.
So parents, when you’re watching a lesson and your child makes a risky-but-developmentally appropriate choice, take a breath.
Trust your coach.
And give your child the opportunity to discover what they are capable of.
You don’t have to stop every fall to help your child grow. Sometimes, you just need to be close enough to watch them get back up. 🌊

💦 WATERBABIES SIGN-UP IS NOW OPEN FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR! 💦
I want to share this story because I think this is such a good example of what consistency, guidance, and simple play can do for both a mom and a baby. ❤️
Baby G and his mom started with me on June 12 when he was just 4 months old. They booked one-on-one time for some guidance during those first few months in the water.
Today is August 22, and we have had seven lessons.
That is it. Seven 20-minute lessons.
We didn’t do huge things every session. We didn’t constantly push for the next big skill. We worked on getting comfortable in the pool, kicking, paddling, going underwater, and simply navigating and playing in the water together.
We also never went underwater more than about three times in a lesson.
But we stayed consistent.
Mom asked questions. She listened to my advice and followed the instructions I gave her, even when something made her a little uncomfortable. And then, most of the time, she and Baby G just played while I watched and guided them—sometimes from the deck and sometimes right there in the pool.
And as I review the content of all our underwater videos from day 1, I notice something really cool. Baby G often looks at me right before he goes underwater, and then I go underwater first to show him exactly what is about to happen.
I’m there in the background supporting and assisting, helping him know what to expect but I am not doing the hard stuff, mom is! And very seldom did he fuss. When he did, he recovered quickly. Going underwater was never turned into a negative experience.
And as soon as he hits the water, he starts splashing. 💦
The same baby who once hated bath time now loves bath time and the pool. He is becoming an active little kicker and paddler, and both he and Mom are more comfortable navigating the water together.
And honestly, that is a BIG deal.
Sometimes progress doesn’t look like learning something completely new every single week. Sometimes progress is a baby who was uncomfortable becoming excited. A mom who was nervous about water submersion becoming confident. A baby recovering quickly instead of crying for the rest of the experience. A little more kicking. A little more paddling. A little more comfort.
Small progress adds up. Consistency matters.
Just 20 minutes once a week can make a difference when you continue to practice, play, listen, and give your baby time to grow.
Waterbabies is now open for sign-ups for the rest of the year, and I hope to see you and your little one there! 💙

We are so thankful to have access to East High Pool. We have changing space, restrooms, showers, and the ability to bring an additional guest. We love this location and want to continue utilizing it, being grateful for it, taking care of it, and speaking positively about the opportunity we have there.
And yes, the water may take some getting used to at first, but attitude matters. Come ready to play, bring your towel, and give both yourself and your baby time to adjust. 😊
You don’t have to do something big every week. You just have to keep showing up. The little moments are where the growth happens. 💦👶❤️

📢 Stay tuned for the Waterbabies sign-up link and full details post!
For families currently signed up for Waterbabies classes in August, unfortunately, the schools do not have enough staffing to open the pool this weekend or next weekend for us so we will not have a class. Your cancellation messages go out this evening. We will not be holding an official class this Saturday or next Saturday but there will be open swim times available for our class missed. Our first group Waterbabies classes will begin the second week of September.
Classes will be divided by level this time around for better progression. We are so grateful for the space LCSD #1 provides and are excited to make the most of it! 💕🏊♀️

💙 Miss Frankie is back and doing her THANG 💙
This sweet friend cried through most of her lesson on Friday… but ended up laying back, relaxed, floating, and feeling safe in Miss Frankie’s arms. 🥹
And before that, she helped her big sister with her intro to stroke needs like that EXTRA push to use tall arms, swim across the pool, and get to the next level.
She’s just all around amazing y’all!
Building trust takes patience, and Miss Frankie is so wonderful at helping little swimmers feel comfortable in the water.
If you’ve been hoping to squeeze in some consistent lessons before August, this is your chance! Frankie has openings every Friday this July (except this Friday).
If you’d like to give lessons a try with Miss Frankie, grab a spot here:
