Stop chasing the perfect shot.

When you’re focused on perfection, every small mistake feels bigger. You start overthinking, adjusting, second-guessing, and putting more pressure on yourself.

Instead, focus on building a process you can repeat.

Your breathing.
Your setup.
Your focus.
Your ex*****on.

The more consistent your routine becomes, the less room there is for doubt to take over.

You don’t need every shot to be perfect. You need to trust the process you’ve trained. 🏹

That’s mental performance.

It doesn’t.

Your circumstances will change.

Your energy will change.

Your environment will change.

Some days you’ll feel confident, and other days you’ll have doubts.

Consistent performance isn’t about eliminating those differences.

It’s about having strategies that help you respond to them.

That’s why routines and rituals matter.

They give you an anchor.

When everything around you feels different, you have something familiar that reminds you how you want to show up.

Mental performance doesn’t suddenly matter when the stakes get high. It starts when we’re kids.

It starts with how a child learns to respond when they miss the shot, lose the game, make a mistake, or feel nervous before competing.

Do they learn that failure means they’re not good enough? Or do they learn how to reset, adapt, and try again?

Confidence, focus, resilience, emotional regulation, and the ability to perform under pressure are skills. And just like physical skills, they can be developed from a young age.

Teaching kids how to manage their thoughts and emotions isn’t just about creating better athletes.

It’s about giving them tools they can carry into school, relationships, careers, and life.

The mental game starts long before anyone is keeping score.

We often hear about the importance of routines. Morning routines. Pre-game routines. Work routines. Nighttime routines.

And routines absolutely have value.
But there’s another piece of the puzzle that can make those routines even more powerful: rituals.

While the two terms are often used interchangeably, there’s an important difference between simply going through a routine and intentionally creating a ritual.

Understanding that difference can help you create the consistency, focus, and confidence needed to perform at your best.

You train your body for competition. But are you training your mind, too? 🧠🏹

A Mental Performance Consultant helps athletes develop the mental skills needed to perform when it matters most.

That can look like:
• Building confidence under pressure
• Improving focus and concentration
• Managing nerves and competition anxiety
• Bouncing back after mistakes or disappointing performances
• Creating consistent pre-performance routines
• Strengthening resilience when things don’t go as planned
• Learning how to stay present instead of getting stuck in your head

Because talent and physical preparation can only take you so far.

When the pressure is on, your ability to manage your thoughts, emotions, and attention can be the difference between simply having the skill and actually being able to execute it.

The mental side of your sport deserves training, too. 🎯

This is a big one.

Fifteen years ago I finished my Master's degree in Sport Psychology and started a small performance consulting business. Then life went a different direction - I spent eight years teaching AP Psychology and coaching at Gill St. Bernard's School Gill St. Bernard’s Athletics

In 2020 I left teaching to get back to the work I'd always wanted to do: helping people perform, grow, and figure out the space between where they are and where they want to be.

Somewhere in there I started chasing something I'd been thinking about since grad school. It took a lot longer than I expected - hundreds of supervision hours, a long application process, months of studying, and one very long morning last week.

I'm now a Certified Mental Performance Consultant® through the AASP — Michael Cascini, MA, CMPC

Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, especially Hannah Huesman, MS, CMPC, Dr. Molly, MS, CMPC, and Jenn Noon. I genuinely couldn't have done this without you.

Confidence isn’t always something you magically feel. Sometimes, it’s something you build through repetition.

The same warm-up.
The same breathing pattern.
The same pre-shot routine.
The same mental cues.

Rituals give your brain fewer decisions to make and less uncertainty to manage. When you know what comes next, you can stop overthinking and start executing.

In archery, consistency isn’t just physical. It’s mental.

Build a routine you trust, then trust yourself to follow it. 🎯

Here are five mental strategies that can make a major difference in archery:

1. Build a repeatable pre-shot routine 🎯
Use the same mental and physical sequence before every shot. Consistency reduces overthinking and helps your brain recognize, “I’ve done this before.”
2. Focus on the process, not the score 🧠
Instead of thinking about hitting a 10, focus on what you can control: breathing, form, anchor, aim, and ex*****on. Good results follow good processes.
3. Learn to reset after a bad shot 🔄
One bad arrow doesn’t need to become five. Acknowledge it, take the lesson, and mentally start fresh with the next shot.
4. Practice under pressure 🔥
Don’t only practice when you’re relaxed. Create consequences, keep score, compete with someone, or give yourself one arrow to hit a specific target. Train your brain to perform when it matters.
5. Use visualization before you shoot 👀
Mentally rehearse the shot you want to make. Picture the draw, feel your anchor, see the pin settle, and visualize the arrow hitting exactly where you want it.

Archery is physical, but your ability to stay focused, confident, and composed can be what separates a good shot from a great one.
