A twelve-year-old told his mom he didn't want to go to practice anymore — not because he was hurt, but because his coach just yelled at him when he messed up. And it never helped him get better.
Here's the truth: spotting a mistake doesn't require any skill. Everyone in the gym already saw it. What players need from coaches is the *why* it's happening and the *what to do instead*. That's what actually changes players over time.
Our new blog post breaks down what real corrective coaching looks like — and what to watch for when you're evaluating a program for your player. Link in bio.
Yelling Isn't Coaching
Spotting a mistake is easy. Fixing it is the coach's job. Here's what real player development feedback looks like — and what to watch for.

An 11-year-old walked into our gym with three years of organized basketball. Never shot a left-handed layup. Nobody had ever asked him to.
We teach our 5-year-olds to finish with their non-dominant hand. They're not great at it — but they know they're supposed to work on it. So what happened in those three years?
It's not the player's fault. But somebody in that gym should have said something. Every session, every year. This is one of the most fundamental skills in basketball, and it gets skipped constantly.
New post is up — we get into why this keeps happening, what parents should watch for, and what we actually do about it at Hoops College. Link in comments.

A player told me last spring he'd been working on his handles for two years. He was clean, fast, confident. Twenty minutes into our first session he said, "I need to get better."
That's not a failure — that's the first honest moment of his development.
At Hoops College, we take the fundamentals everyone talks about and go several levels deeper. Not just performing skills — using them. Not just clean reps — real decisions. Not avoiding mistakes — learning from them.
If your player is ready to find out what the fundamentals actually look like up close, we'd love to have them in the gym.

We have a quote painted on the gym wall: "I was born with something inside me that refuses to settle for less than average."
Mid-session last week, one of our players stopped, looked up at it, and said — in the most matter-of-fact voice — "I look at that every day I come in and I refuse to settle for average."
I had nothing to say. That almost never happens.
The reason it landed? I believes her. She's improved visibly, demonstrably, in a short amount of time. That doesn't happen by accident. It happens when a player actually holds themselves to a real standard — not performing effort, but demanding it.
That's the environment we're building at Hoops College. Read more at the link.
When a Player Makes You Speechless
A Hoops College player stopped mid-session, looked at the wall, and said she refuses to settle for average. Coach Aram believed her. Here's why that mindset is…

We just built a new team — and then told our best players they can't play on it.
That's not a mistake. It's the point.
This team exists for players working to make their middle school squad: kids who need actual game minutes, real pressure, and live experience before tryouts. Putting our most advanced players on this roster doesn't develop anyone.
Will we lose some games? Probably. Losing is never the goal — we're going to compete hard. But every loss is something we can learn from, and that learning is exactly what these players need right now. That matters more than the final score in November.
If your player is in that fight-for-a-spot window, reach out. Let's talk about what they actually need.
Our Best Players Aren't Allowed to Play
At Hoops College, we built a team and left our most advanced players off the roster. Here's why that decision is exactly what real player development looks…

Nobody ever says they want to play at the pay-to-play level. But more players end up there than anyone admits — and most families never see it coming.
The jersey looks the same. The school name is real. The word "college" is technically accurate. But nobody was actually evaluating your player. The spot was available because someone could pay for it, not because a coach had to win games and decided your player was the answer.
At Hoops College, honest evaluation is the whole point. We work with players in environments that tell the truth — about where they stand, what needs to change, and whether the level they're picturing is the one they're actually working toward.
If you're not sure where your player honestly stands right now, that's the question worth answering.
Nobody Ever Says They Want to Play at the Pay-to-Play Level
The pay-to-play tier looks just like the real thing — same jersey, same words. Here's how families can tell the difference before it's too late to matter.

One of our players waited until the gym emptied out, then asked straight up: "Coach, am I good enough to play in college?"
Here's the honest answer we give every time — it's not yes and it's not no.
"Good enough" is not a talent score. It's whether you're developing fast enough, competing in the right environments, and actually putting your film in front of coaches who can recruit you. Those are things you control.
We don't tell players what they want to hear, and we don't write anyone off early. We help players compete hard enough that the game answers the question for them.

Are You Good Enough to Play at the Next Level?
Parents and players ask us constantly whether they're good enough to play in college. The real answer isn't yes or no — it's three questions that actually…

The truth is, the biggest obstacle to your player's development usually isn't talent, coaching, or competition level.
It's consistency. Specifically — whether they're actually showing up week after week when life gets complicated.
At Hoops College, we hold a standard every single session. Aram holds that same standard for himself — because he has goals for this program and knows excuses won't get him there. We ask families to hold one too. Not because we're rigid, but because players are watching. They see what actually gets prioritized when things get hard.
If your player has been in and out this season and you're wondering why the progress isn't sticking — let's talk. We can figure out what needs to change.

"There isn't a better basketball environment near us. We've looked."
We hear it a lot — and sometimes it's true. So here's the honest truth: an environment isn't a building, a logo, or a follower count. It's a few people who agree on what good looks like, refuse to let the standard slip, and tell a kid you could be good at this.
You don't need the perfect one an hour away. You need one honest one.
Ours isn't perfect either — it's small, and we claw every day to make it better. But the standard matters more than the zip code.
Can't find one near you? Let's talk — or build it yourself. It's allowed. 🏀
What If There Isn't a Better Environment Near You?
If your child isn't improving, the honest answer is usually the environment. So we tell families to find a better one. And more often than you'd think, we get…
