The Charleston Ballet was formed in 1956 by Andre Van Damme. In 1989, Kim Pauley was appointed Artistic Director, becoming one of the very few women directors of a regional academy in the United States. For over 60 years, our troupe has enriched the cultural life of West Virginia by performing hundreds of traditional and original ballets.

THE LEGEND OF MOTHMAN IS COMING TO THE STAGE!

Something legendary is taking flight this fall.

The 2026–2027 season opens October 23–24, 2026 at 7:30 PM at the WV Culture Center Theater with the WORLD PREMIERE of The Legend of Mothman, an original ballet inspired by one of West Virginia’s most enduring cryptids.

This thrilling new production brings the legendary Appalachian cryptid to life through:
• Powerful choreography by K.R.Pauley
• Innovative projection technology by Carol & Mike DelGrosso
• An original story by Deborah Novak
• A unique score by composer Matt Jackfert

The wait is over! Our American Academy Ballet Fall Semester kicks off today, September 8th, and there’s still time to register and join us for a wonderful season of dance!

Whether your dancer is taking their very first steps or continuing their training, we offer classes for all ages and abilities, including:

The WV Music Hall of Fame's Glotfelty Film Series continues on September 20 with a screening of the 2018 documentary “Andre Van Damme: the Story of the Charleston Ballet.”

Directed by CB alum Deborah Novak, the film chronicles the founding of The Charleston Ballet by Belgian dancer Andre Van Damme in 1956, making it one of the 10 oldest ballet companies in the U.S.

2 p.m. The West Virginia Museum of Music. The Charleston Town Center (second floor).

We’re excited to host the incredibly talented local artist Brandon Cremeans, whose work invites us to take a step back in time.

Brandon transforms pieces of old yearbooks into unique, nostalgic collages, giving memories, photographs, and forgotten pages a whole new life. His work is a beautiful reminder of the power of reuse, repurpose, and reimagine. What was once tucked away in an old yearbook becomes something timeless and meaningful all over again.

Come experience Brandon’s art and celebrate the creativity that makes our local art community so special.
