Opposite Side Climb to Hip Key is a classic climb and it’s also a transition. In our aerial silk classes we first teach this move as a transition into hip key and we save the climb for later, because to learn the transition aerial silk students don’t need to be straddling up from the air yet.

✅Details make all the difference! See all the details in our library.

Once our students have mastered the transition into hip key and they’ve also got their straddle up inversion from the air, then the climb comes more easily but there are still a few tricks to make it more efficient. This aerial silks teaching tutorial video for Opposite Side Climb into Hip Key covers our progressions and technique tips to make both the transition into hip key and the complete climb successful for a variety of students.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve done this climb over the years. I think of it like the spinach of aerial. It’s healthy, vital, and makes you stronger for the challenges to come.

There are a few things I focus on every single time I warm up with a climb like this. Here are just a few of the reasons I consider this such a great warm up climb for those students who are comfortable straddling up in the air.

☑️ Practice hitting a stacked straddle up each time.
☑️ Practice shooting energy up through the legs to hook the knee.
☑️ Keep a tight knee hook to gain height.
☑️Changes sides automatically, but remember to…
☑️ Switch which hand is on top with each step.

♥️ There are so many really fun variations of this classic climb, and so many styles to explore. That’s why we hone in on the important details right from the start, so our students are ready to take it wherever they want to go.

☑️If you’re a member, you can find the full tutorials for many different variations of Opposite Side Climb in our library, including all the technical details, training drills, building blocks, how to scale them up or down, how to prep, common mistakes to avoid, sequencing ideas to challenge your students physical and theory understanding of the skills, and ideas for where to go next.

Leg Lifts are a key conditioning drill for aerialists at all levels. Leg Lifts require the deep core to stabilize the body effectively so that the rest of the core muscles can work together to lift the legs. There are many different ways to train Leg Lifts on aerial sling and many different ways to progress and challenge them.

✅Details make all the difference! See all the details in our library.

Our aerial sling teaching tutorial video for Leg Lifts covers a variety of accessible Leg Lift variations that use the support of the sling to help hold some of the aerialists body weight. These progressions are what we start all of our aerial sling students with and they’re useful for so many more advanced moves on sling. We cover different variations of hanging Leg Lifts in other tutorials in our aerial sling library.

The hands-free variation of Single Knee Hang in the Spanset is a dramatic extension of the easier hands-on version. It is important to mention right away that this is a potentially dangerous skill. While students are first learning the skill, the line between very supported and no support is thin, and it can shift quickly. Small differences in leg shape and mobility can make this skill much harder for some students.

This tutorial covers the basics of getting in and out of the shape as well as exploring a few options from the basic setup. Because of the risks, we always start students with simply getting in and out of the skill.

The Russian Entry into Thigh Hitch Seat is a quick and clever transition that Jordan discovered when she was nerding out on the connections between Russian Climbs and Thigh Hitches on aerial silks. This creative and innovative aerial silks transition is very satisfying, but it is also very technical. Our aerial silks teaching tutorial video for this unique combo covers the hidden tricks that make this transition work efficiently and safely for different bodies on aerial silks.

The Dive Over the Cross Entry to Inside Seatbelt is classic, fun, and iconic, but it can be more tricky than aerial sling students expect because we need to make space for our body to pass between the fabrics and if we don’t teach students how to do that then the move can feel very awkward and stuck. Our aerial sling teaching tutorial video for this dynamic transition covers the progressions that have consistently helped our aerial students with different bodies make this move work consistently.

Half Hip Hang on Top is one of my favorite skills on Aerial Hoop. It is another skill that at first looks and feels like it shouldn’t work. But it does, and it is really fun. This tutorial will cover a variety of exits. Ironically, even though most students are skeptical the supports will work, we always warn them to wear a second layer of clothes to protect the skin of the inner thigh. There is so much support, the friction can be rough on the skin.

The Half Hip Hang on the Top Bar gives me so much joy. I have always been attracted to skills that look like they shouldn’t be possible. I also remember my discovery process. I literally started in the Hip Hang on the top and asked myself what happens if I try a Half Hip Hang. I moved slowly and cautiously, and eventually I got my answer.

Wheeldown Through the Middle is a really satisfying and creative variation of Wheeldown on aerial silks. The Crochet Around Entrance into Wheeldown Through the Middle is direct and surprising, and our aerial silk students love studying this entry alongside the similar Dancer Wrap Entry that’s linked in the variations section of this tutorial. Our aerial silks teaching tutorial video for this unique aerial silks Wheeldown covers all the details about making this entry work easily and consistently.

The Rebecca Wrap is a fairly complex wrap on aerial sling, and this Rebecca Wrap Roll Around variation is a unique and exciting addition to the Rebecca Split position. In our aerial sling classes, we teach this to our more advanced aerial sling students, because this skill requires more height, it’s more complicated to get in and out of, and there’s a bigger risk of getting stuck in a tangle. Our aerial sling tutorial video for this intricate and exciting skill covers the hidden details that make this Roll Around variation work consistently and safely.

The Forearm Press: Up, Over, and Roll tutorial is a teaching progression for any skill that uses a forearm support. These were so effective that we decided to make them a skill in our curriculum. The three variations are Press Up, Press Over, and Press Roll. This tutorial covers all three.

We developed this skill, along with Forearm Press Basics, to introduce forearm support skills like Hip Circles in smaller, more accessible pieces. Pressing the forearms into the hoop is a lot to process. There is so much sensation that students often have a hard time absorbing any other cues or steps.

✅Details make all the difference! See all the details in our library.

We often present these to our students without ever mentioning Hip Circles or any other forearm support skill. As students get more and more comfortable with the forearm support over time, they’re being set up to succeed when they first approach skills like Hip Circles.
