💛🐴We’re thrilled to be able to welcome one of the mom-and-baby pairs rescued from the livestock auction. They will be joining our herd at MHR once quarantine wraps up! These two have been through so much, and we can’t wait to give them their fresh start.

IYKYK. Malone had a really big day you guys. He took his first steps outside his run 🥳 We’ve done a ton of work learning “come”, and touching, coming to, and following the target stick. We’ve also worked on leading, but for this moment, it was important to give him choice and freedom to decide if and when he wanted to expand his safety zone, and if he wanted to go back to his run. Although it might seem easy to just step through the gate, it’s not - it’s an entirely new location! I was really proud he was able to take baby steps to work to the moment you see in this video, and that he was able to self-regulate and engage with our training outside his run. Now we build on this! Guess who wore a fly mask for the first time?! You got it! Malone!!! So proud of this boy for working through all the baby steps (from touching to wearing, and learning about the sound and feel of Velcro), to achieve this. Additionally, the change in visual perception can be scary but he did really well looking around and exploring his familiar environment without panic, and just curiosity. 🐴 Momentum is building for homeless horses.

A recent measure advancing through Congress would help close a long-standing loophole that allows horses to be transported across borders for slaughter. While not yet law, it’s an encouraging step toward stronger protections for American horses.

We see firsthand why prevention, protection, and second chances matter. So, how you can help move the Van Drew-Titus measure forward?

* Share information on social media to increase awareness and encourage others to contact Congress.
* Support horse rescues and rehoming organizations, since the rescuing is an important part of reducing the slaughter pipeline.
* Participating in advocacy campaigns from organizations such as the ASPCA, Animal Welfare Institute, EQUUS Foundation, and other equine welfare groups.
* Encouraging responsible horse ownership, including planning for retirement, rehoming, and long-term care.
