If I had a 10-year-old pitcher standing in front of me, THIS is what I would tell them ‼️‼️‼️
And it sure as hell wouldn’t be how many pitches she throws or how hard the radar gun says she is.
1. COMMAND OVER EVERYTHING.
I don’t care if you throw 55 or 65. Can you throw the damn ball where you want to when your heart is pounding and runners are on base? Can you own BOTH sides of the plate? Can you get ahead? Velocity gets attention. Command gets outs.
2. CHANGEUP OR BUST.
Yep. I said it. 😂 Before we start collecting 15 different pitches like Pokémon cards, can we PLEASE learn how to take speed off the ball? A nasty changeup at 10 will teach you more about pitching than chasing another breaking pitch you can’t consistently command. Fastball. Changeup. LOCATION. Make hitters uncomfortable.
3. CAN YOU COMPETE WHEN YOU’RE TOAST?
This one matters more than parents want to admit.
What happens when you walk two? Give up a bomb? Your defense boots one? The umpire squeezes you? You’re tired, frustrated, embarrassed and NOTHING feels good?
Can you still get the next hitter?
Because pitching isn’t about looking dominant when everything is working. Everybody loves pitching when they’re shoving.
I want to see who you become when the game punches you directly in the mouth.
At 10 years old, I’m not trying to manufacture a college pitcher.
I’m trying to build a COMPETITOR.
Command.
Changeup.
Compete.
You can chase velocity later. You can add pitches later. But if we skip the foundation because we’re obsessed with making a 10-year-old look “advanced,” don’t be shocked when everything falls apart once hitters actually get good.
Master the boring 💩 first.
